Glovebox lock removal...I'm stumped!

Yes, at the base of the lock there's supposed to pin to depress but it's beat me and I need some help

- in 2004 I tried, failed and painted around it
- Now I have spent an hour MINIMUM of trying to find depress  that pin key in/ key out/ locked/unlocked...nothing

Tips greatly appreciated!

Nacho-RT74

There is a lock tab hidden. You need the key.

Procedure:

Insert the key
With open lid, lock the latch then the cylinder
Remove the key
Catch the tab throught the cylinder window, press, and insert the key. Now the key will keep this secure tab pressed, and will be able to pull out the cylinder.

There are several pics and threas about. Will search

Maybe using an allen key ( L shaped ) could get the tab/pin pressed while inserting the key

And if you do not have a key that fits and the whole reason of taking it apart is to put a new lock in that you have a key for how does one go about it ?

if the cylinder spins to lock, you got the right key. You are just not catching the locking tab to press it. Or need to play with it a bit more

Key goes in lock all the way and turns to unlock. Still can't see or feel tab, but gone to work, check back when I get home.

Green 69 thx for parts link, but that's a  console lock

On my 70 it was soooo simple I kept overdoing it. I removed the whole door and benched it. (Not sure yours is the same.)

AKCharger... you can allways pull it out strong or pry it out LOL.... the bezel/washer which snaps on ( actually is pressed ) and holds cylinder/barrel in place locking the tab will jump out from the cylinder container.

DON'T ASK ME HOW I KNOW IT!!! LOL

then you can install it back.

THAT'S HOW I LEARNT HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS LOL... don't think I allways knew how to remove it safely!!!

you can also remove the 1/4" screws and play with the latch assembly to get more room to reach the locking tab

Nope...defeated again. I can ONLY conclude that pin is broke off. I can move the lock a round and see clearly in the access hole, there is the barrel of the lock and that's IT no pin, latch, clip or anything. I was just going to buy that lock till I realized I cant cut the lock out without buggering up the door. So then I thought I'd just buy a door off ebay...but I'd have to paint it and back at square 1 with that STUPID @##$%^ lock!

Guess I'll do what I did in '05, mask off lock and paint it again  :-\

Nacho-RT74

why don't you try to just pull it out strongly? pry it out! The plate/flange installed by pressure which keeps the barrel in place with that tab up will jump out and you'll find out what's the problem. It can be reassembled!!! ( BTDT )... and if not, just replace it!

Click the lock catch closed and try it.

AKcharger

Thanks guys
- Video's helpful put that pin is no where to be found, I can see clearly in the hole and it's not there. Only thing I can think is the key isn't the original one it's not rotating the pin around???
- Yup trued prying, any harder and i'll dent the  door
- Yup had latch closed :-)

Nacho-RT74

if you can lock the glove box, key is correct. Actually any key is able to keep down that tab when is pressed and key inserted, but just the correct key will allow and spin the cylinder to lock then to reach that tab.

Well the key goes all the way in but turning it only opens the latch, no locking. So I guess that's the issue, you need the ORIGINAL key. well at least I have my answer now why it wasn't working.

b5blue

I didn't have the right key for my 70. (?)

Nacho-RT74

BINGO! is not release the latch but lock it! once is locked, which is what makes the barrel spins around 180°,  the tab appears there!!!

Then, remove key ( with system still locked ), press the tab, insert the key back and THAT'S the moment where the locking tab the same as the cylinder tabs will keep down to pull out the barrel out of the latch housing

Still comes down to why would you want to take it apart if you have the right key but you can not take it apart if you have the wrong key and need to change it ?
next project 70 Charger FJ5 green

Nacho-RT74

he already said is not able to lock it, so it doesn't have the right key. I think he oly wants to paint the glove box lid.

This takes me to a question. Do you have the console lid with cylinder or without ? it should also match with it.

Nacho is right, just want to paint it, it's cleaner with lock removed.

- What a stupid set-up if you loose your key...you can NEVER change the lock!
- nope bench seat, no console
- no super bigge just mask and paint, still annoying though
- good to know match sets are out there but you'd need a machinist to remove the lock without damaging the door

b5blue

So you put a key in and have the latch up like as if the door was closed when inside the car? Key in-latch up-look for release through hole.  :scratchchin:

70gtx440dana

It is very easy to pop off the chrome knob. Just stick a flat screw drive in the end where the key goes....only slightly.... and pry it to one side. It will pop of easily. Then for re-assembly use your bench vise and a socket or similar item to press it back on. Super easy way to remove it if you do not have the key. Note: when you re-assemble there are alignment features you have to align properly. Good luck!

...and use the key to turn the lock so the pin is exposed in the little hole. Unfortunately if  you don't have the right key not gonna happen

no... I just got vicegrips catching by the outside knob and pulled out hard... it came out... I didn't know how to make the job and went rude. After that just learnt how it works LOL... but I could reassembly it back.

There are actually TWO windows with that little brass tang you push down. The one you can see with the lock bolded in place. And the one you CANT see on the side. Take out the bolts and spin the lock a little and bingo the hidden window appears. Thats the one you use to take it out with OUT the key.  :RantExplode: :RantExplode:

Nacho-RT74

But you'll need to press every tab because the deal with the key is not just the locking tab but all the barrel tabs kept pressed to allow to pull it out clean.

I missed it also, this is a 3rd gen.  May not be the same as our 68 or 69.

Nacho-RT74

yes, is the same than previous years. But if trunk cylinder was changed sometime in the past and "accidentally" the factory trunk key was lost you don't have the glove box key either anymore.

I have at this moment on my car 2 trunk keys... one just for the trunk which I replaced, the other one still the original which works to both glovebox on my car
