What's your definition of "a ton of money"?  Wrecked Chargers occasionally appear on copart, but they still bring $15-$25k+ depending how badly damaged.

  Get into AMD's site and make a list of prices of tin so if you look at a car you have an idea on price  then double it for the things you can't see, that are probably worn out, known problems and not being reproduced.  My 68 was paid for years ago and have done all the work myself (retired body man) and  I must have 10K in parts and paint in it so far and no where near finished to give you an idea.

so your saving a fair bit  of time & money not  fixing rot with this   .

That inner fender area was either hacked out or battery acid damage. Super solid car with cleanest floors I've ever seen. It sold though...

It is a thread I started on a car that I bought last year. It was wrecked and sat for 24 years. I have been lucky with some stuff but I also have some experience with cars. A car like mine is not for someone's first project.

the nice thing is, I have experience with fixing up classics, i fixed up an 87 chevy and am just about done with a 68 mustang

Okay, good.
One very sound bit of advice: Find the most complete car that you can find. A stripped out shell may hide several surprises when you start noticing parts that aren't there and are hard to find. I bought a '73 Challenger in 2002 and those cars have some E body only parts that are not easy to locate. What sucks is when you know something is missing but have no idea of what it is or what it looks like. Window mechanisms are one thing....a small bracket can be missing and completely halt you from moving forward.

Just be patient. They are out there. Sometimes persistence pays off. Not a Charger, but I did score a 70' Road Runner not too long ago for free just by stopping and asking about it.
