I have a friend who talks about building an A-body for efficient cruising.  We've had these conversations.  

A 4-banger might save a lot less gas than you'd think, at least in a '69 Charger body.  It still has very bad aero and probably weighs 3600 lbs or more with AC and power steering/brakes.  That thing is asking for at least 3.0 liters which is already 6-cylinder territory.



My friend's A-body idea is to run a 273 V8 with EFI and a roller cam.  5spd overdrive + tall highway axle gears.  A nice easy conversion (the LA motors are so well supported) with some usable HP if you rev it up.  It would probably get awesome mileage for a V8 muscle car that you don't hate driving.  

The aero on the body would still be hurting though.  60-65 mph would be a lot more efficient than 80+ mph.

I know a guy....He wants to put a Toyota 4 cylinder and a 5 speed into a 64 Valiant. He has this dumb ass idea that it will be great on gas mileage.  :eek2:
I keep telling the fucker that the slant siz would make more power and probably get equal mileage. An overworked engine is not going to get good mileage.

In the 90's some guy was running a 4 in a full size Mercury 1/4 circle track at Port Angeles WA in bump-to-pass class. It actually did ok - probably had 50/50 weight distribution. I think he just kept his foot on the gas the entire time.

My daily driver has a 5.7 Hemi with MDS, I currently have the MDS deactivated and the difference between 4 and 8 cylinder operation is about 2-3 mpg.

Briggs & Stratton makes a fine engine-I have used it for years. Might be able to run them in tandem.
