I have a friend up here that did a '69 Charger convert....looks real good in person.

There was one Charger in the works to be made into a convertible back in the late 60's....the convertible top was to re-create the tunnel rear window with the sail panels....the car was up here for a while, not sure where it's located not.

I have pictures of the car somewhere

Yeah....
I mean absolutely no disrespect to ChargerVert but when comparing the styling side by side, a Charger with a stock roof is beautiful and the convertible is not. All the body panels of the 68-70 Charger flow together much like a well tuned Orchestra flows and blends music together. It all works. With the roof gone, it looks unfinished, maybe unbalanced in some way.
The 68-70 Belvedere/Road Runner/GTX look fine as a convertible since the fenders and quarter panels don't have the same amount of curve and bulge that the Chargers had.

It's a matter of preference like anything else, I have six other Chargers to look at with stock roofs, one has a factory hole in it, one has flush rear glass, I like to mix it up. Having everything that a Charger has to offer with the convertible top takes it to the next level for me.

Convertibles have an extra piece of galvanized inner rocker channel structure that connects the front frame and torque box to the rear spring mount and torque box.

yes as far as I know  they did  , a 3 sided shaped piece in side each rocker made out of  thick gauge  metal , I read an article years ago in a mopar mag that the actual convertible rockers were stamped out of thicker gauge steel but think this is not the case & who ever wrote the article originally got mixed up with this thick gauge shaped 3 sided insert that went inside the almost the whole length of  the rocker panels on convertible cars !  ive not taken much interest in convertibles so never investigated further , although I did have saved years ago , pictures of these think for e bodies too , but that info was lost along with loads of other interesting mopar stuff when my computer blew up good  few years ago now .
going off the subject a little although still about  factory body shell reinforcement parts , I was reading long time ago that real a Cuda  body shell  had more metal as in reinforcement  parts in it  & weighed more  compared to a barracuda body shell ! not sure how true this is / was  :shruggy:

I doubt very much !  the guy has added frame connectors though
but looks like its the ones that follow the contour of the floor ! & not as strong IMO as what was the more  commonly used  1/4 inch   thick box sections to tie the frame rails together .

I wouldn't expect anyone to build their car to make me happy, I just don't like the spoilers at all. I'm not much of a fan of the wing cars either aside from their racing heritage. I respect the mechanics and engineering of the wing cars but would never want to own one.

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you !!

chargervert

They work flawlessly,I guess you just have to know how to operate them! It's not that complex,Start up vehicle, and put your foot on the brake pedal, then pull the first lever all the way back, then pull the second lever back, then pull the third lever back, then you are in first gear. Remove foot from brake pedal, and mash the gas pedal, after reaching desired RPM range, slam third shift lever forward, and first to second shift will happen, wind up to desired RPM,and slam second lever forward, and the second to third gear shift will occur, the first lever works the park, reverse, neutral, and drive functions. It's not rocket science, but I guess the clueless magazine hacks didn't figure out how to operate them. It may be a good theft deturent, because those clowns probably still stuck in a parking lot trying to figure out how the shifter works so they can get home!

alfaitalia

It does seem a unnecessarily complex way of controlling the tranny though.....what are the advantages over more conventional methods?..apart from looking cool/different with three levers of course..which I like! I assume there must be some or why bother.

I also have never liked the PLYMOUTH decals on anything other than the Superbirds.
People can do what they want with their cars. I have no right to tell them that they cannot build them their way. If I were judging their car at a show, they are more likely to get passed by for one that had no wing UNLESS it was originally fitted with one, then due to originality, I'd have to put my opinion aside. I don't like Sublime or FM3 pink but if the car looks correct, I have to overlook my own preferences.

As for what is started as, I believe that it likely started out as a Coronet. The pot metal trim piece that ties the stainless mouldings together at the base of the top is different from Dodge to Plymouth, & this one looks to be Dodge. The work involved changing a Charger to a convertible would be insane & it's a lot easier to hang Charger sheet metal on the back of an existing convertible. The doors & the entire nose is pretty much a simple bolt on swap.

I find it funny when people bitch & moan about what the Charger looks like with the top down. The whole purpose of a convertible it to put the top down & drive. Most ragtops are hideous with the tops up but who cares? What do they plan on doing with it, drive around with a big fucking mirror mounted next to them to look at themselves driving?....LOL  :smilielol:

I have had a couple of people tell me that the 500  grill and roof detracts  from the Charger style. My answer is maybe but it picked up 7 mph so who cares. :smilielol:
