The vin tag on my 68 charger (on the dash) is silver
Every other 68 ive looked at they are black.
Mine is An RT hence has L in the vin, the other chargers are not RT
is this anything to do with it? Did the RTs have silver vin tags.
wierd.

Simple explanation. The paint has either flaked off with sun, moisture & age or someone removed the paint off of it.

The "L" on your VIN tag indicates 440 engine (which makes it an R/T) but it's the 2nd character "S" that indicates the model is an R/T. Because you could have a "J" code (426 Hemi) instead of an "L" code (440) and both would be R/Ts.

As far as your tag being silver, the only thing I can think of (w/o seeing a pic of it) is that the black paint was stripped or sun faded.  :shruggy:

Yea i figured that the paint and or sun had something to do with it.
But when you see 4 other chargers at a show and yours is the only one that the vin has happened to
what are the odds.  :shruggy:

I guess it all depends how long a car sits outside, and where, decaying in the elements prior to you getting it.

what the other guys say ,  :yesnod:    ive seen quite a few sun/weather bleached vin tags some ive seen completely silver / bare metal ! , ohers ive seen where the weather /sun etc has bleached / worn away / faded etc  the black & white  & all that remains is a bare metal tag with the Chrysler corporation & penta star in black , from where the white lettering  has been removed ..  will checked saved vins to show what i'm talking about  ;)

I have seen a few silver tags also and wondered why the words were in black
But I guess if an even layer baked off then the white lettering would go first and the second layer had not gone yet and leave the black lettering
next project 70 Charger FJ5 green

It happens. Like others said, the paint flakes off over time. I have a '72 Road Runner 400 4 speed dash downstairs with a totally shiny VIN tag because all of the paint is gone.
