The '70 Charger Registry is something I should look into, if they're still interested.
Of course they are! :yesnod:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Ok I havent read this thread since about the first week or so, because I havent had the time it takes to sit down and read it all at once yet.  Well I just did...  Wow.  I had a feeling it was the real deal in the beginning.  Im with you on this one.  Sell it as is and buy yourself a driver because you will enjoy it much more than a display piece, and just think of all the extra money you will have to play with.  Good job on all the hard work tracking down info and getting Dick to authenticate it, nice to see it paid off for you.  This is one of the coolest Charger stories Ive read.

Bull and 6pkrunner, you've stated it just the way I see it. Sell it as is and let someone else make all the restoration decisions and have all the headaches. If the buyer has the time, money, dedication and interest, he may actually enjoy the project. One potential buyer has connections that may be willing and able to secure a series of follow-up Mopar Muscle articles on the restoration of the car. That would be cool. I'd like to see the car get as much exposure and recognition as possible and secure itself a place in history, however insignificant it may be. I've had a few offers on the car, but I'm having a hard time letting it go. Two guys offered their wives in trade. I've been watching for the UPS truck, but they haven't arrived yet. I'd like to do everything I can with the car before letting it go and regretting it later. I'm beginning to have some sentimental attachment to the car and I'd like to think I did everything for her that I could while I had her. The '70 Charger Registry is something I should look into, if they're still interested. I may also contact some other mags to see if there's any interest. I'm still considering repairing the accident damage and taking it to a few shows. I can't decide.

OK, my 2 cents worth.

Sites: don't restore the car, but please fix it up a touch. Replace the front bumper, get another hood on it, rechrome those Cragars, and get Landy to build you an era-authentic Hemi for it.
Do not in any case repaint the body. Do repaint the lettering (era authentic).
Replace the peeling decals. Then show the hell out of it!

A while back, Bill "Maverick" Golden pulled the original "Little Red Wagon" out from behind his shop, cleaned what was left of it up, had a sign painter retouch the faded lettering, stuck some wheels under the wreck and took it on tour.
It was great to see the "Original Wheelstander" after all those years. There's just something about seeing an authentic racecar.
And it would be great to see an ORIGINAL Landy racecar, in ORIGINAL paint!
And your car is THE ONE!

But you would like to see it restored?

Oh yea. Of course I think it should be restored to look exactly like it did when Landy was racing it, only new.

But getting back to the original post by the original owner it sounds as if he doesn't want to mess with it, and I can empathize with him on that simply because of all the hype that's been generated. My advice to him is to follow that feeling (because I would do the same thing) and actually ride the hype to a record high sale, avoid the trouble of restoring a Charger (much less a Landy Charger), buy a nicely restored 2nd gen to drive and enjoy, invest the extra money and cruise around fat and happy in a beautiful '68, '69 or '70 R/T while a bunch of anal-retentive purists piss, moan and argue over how the infamous Landy '70 should be restored. That's all. Unless the guy enjoys stress and blowing money, and worships Landy to the point of sacrificing his sanity to glorify Landy's racing career, I say get rid of the car and be glad you were smart (or lucky) enough to sit on it all these years without having done anything to it.
:iagree:

Been an incredible story from the first post a long while back!

Ghoste

And to think the story isn't even finished yet.

I'm still wondering what the final decision is going to be with the car. I think you should just get it running in its current condition, and show it, and drive it and enjoy it. KEEP the CAR.

73Charger

this seems like a song thread.  Has the owner actually done anyting with it like getting it appraised or showing it to landy to authenticate it.
Man if he did, I would get it professionally resotred, and bring bill to the auction and make enough to muy lots of mopars ;)

he had Landy look at it at carlisle. it's the real deal.

Ghoste

Yep, you need to read the whole thread.  It's the real deal alright.  Hell, one of the posts provides a link to the magazine article in Mopar Muscle in which they talk about it being authenticated.

I have a 1970 Dick Landy Hemi Charger. I've had it in storage for about 30 years. I've decided to sell it but I don't know what it's worth. Any advice?

                  ADDITIONAL INFO 8:11 PM, MAY 14, 2006

Thanks for the responses. I'd like to give a little history on the car.

About 30 years ago, I bought a machined, but not yet assembled 426 Hemi. I was looking for a Hemi car to put it in. I happened to see this Charger in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Landover, MD. I located the owner who said he would sell. He couldn't race anymore because he was going blind. He told me it was a Dick Landy car. At that point, I didn't know the significance of that. He had pulled the Hemi and installed a 440, he said because it didn't need to be rebuilt as often as a Hemi. I remember he said it has 5.33 gears, an acid-dipped body and a 5,000 RPM stall converter. I had not noticed until I got a response to my original posting that the VIN number on the sheet under the rear seat does not match the number on the original bill of sale I was given. I checked the VIN number inside the windshield, and it matches the Chrysler bill of sale, not the number under the seat. Over the years, I have heard that Dick Landy had some cars that he toured with to educate other racers. These may have been cars other than what he raced. I was told by the seller, 25 or 30 years ago, that it was a Dick Landy car, but I have done nothing to verify or document this. I still have the Hemi I bought before the car, but I never assembled it or did anything with it. Some people have told me that none of the factory race cars, or Landy cars, still have the original engines, because they were always trying new ones. I have the original Chrysler bill of sale. I believe the car has never been titled or driven on the street. The VIN number on the bill of sale, and on the dash at the windshield, is XS29ROG207150. The car had Hemi emblems until they were stolen, so I'm sure it is an original Hemi car. The fender tag is missing. I don't know if it was there when I bought the car. It may have been stolen also. I was originally going to build and install the Hemi, paint the car, and drive it on the street. Now, I think I'm kinda glad I didn't. I'll add more pictures later.

Thanks for all the responses and guidance.

Well for starters. Like it was stated before. Don't take the first offer.  I have a few buyers that would be very interested in the car including myself.  Please call me with any info.  Thanx for your time.   Kim "Big Dawg" Deuel / owner.  Big Dawgs Mopars.  bigdawgsmopars@yahoo.com  or call.  1-435-882-1684

*Speed costs money son, how fast do you want to go, and for how long?"
*"Build the biggest engine you can afford the first time."
*"We normally wouldn't use a 383 for this build, parts and labor for a 440 cost the same."

Sad to see him go...   I have a feeling the value of your car might have just went up though...  I dont think you could have cut it any closer, im glad you got the chance to meet him and also that he got the chance to see his old car again.  RIP Dick.

This was not a chapter in this story I wanted to read.

RIP Mr. Landy :'(

I bet the price of this '70 Charger just doubled though. As far as we know, it is the last car he authenticated before his passing.

just might explain to some of the hard heads on hear why Landy wasn't a "jolly fellow" lately.

69_500

Sorry to hear of his passing. It was good to get him to authenticate the car before his passing though. That is something that can't be taken away.

I wish though that he had agreed to sit down and do a video interview with me before his passing. All those stories are gone forever now.

I see that Dandy Dick just died of liver failure on 1/11. So, it may be tougher to identify how the car was used now, but it could also make it worth more. Bye Dick.  :-[

i'm no expert....but i'm pretty sure the car was used for racing.....
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....
