How many drag cars have the original block? I wouldn't pay stupid money for a block that may not even be able to be saved. You got the intake so I would just build the HEMI you have. Let the people that think they know best play keyboard circle jerk with each other.
If it was mine I would have the HEMI built you own and try and find similar pieces Landy used for the remaining parts. The body would stay as is IMO as once it is restored it just wouldn't be the same.

:iagree:

Thanks for keeping us informed :2thumbs:

F the haters (which is what they are) That car is badass and as a couple have stated what original drag car has its original engine!? not many! I would rather build a new Hemi that way you know what you have! That car is so cool I would get it running and mechanically sound and just drive it!!  :2thumbs:
Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

Ghoste

Anyone who thinks you are not doing what you should to YOUR car should be aware they are free to offer purchase on it and at that point do whatever they want to THEIR car.  Now I don't know what it would take to buy it from you but if it were mine I would tell  them the first offer over 25 million USD gets to do whatever they want to it.   :Twocents:  (and you see by my two cent opinion that I won't be offering any money to you which is just as well because I'd likely do the exact same thing you are)

That Charger is so cool and still so intact after 43 years I see what your saying!  :scratchchin: The bottom line is we feel it's in good hands that will make that determination!  :2thumbs:

You must have to be one cocky SOB to think your opinion is worth anything when dealing with another persons car.  It is their car and they can do what they want with it.

This is one car IMO that having the original HEMI engine does not increase the value.  It's already one of a kind with a history second to none.  Having that block would be icing on the cake but definetely not something I'd spend $ on.

Get that bad boy running and stopping so we can have some YouTube videos to drool over.  :drool5:

Ron, First off as everyone has stated it is your car and you should do as you see fit for your car, no doubt.
It is a great piece of Mopar history, and part of local Delmarva history too.

Also wanted to let you know that Delmar drag strip is having a 50th anniversary meet at the end of August this year, and it would be great if you could show the car there. I'm sure you'd hear from a lot of old timers that remember the car when it was raced there.

In regards to the engine. What I had was the over the counter unstamped block that was supplied by Chrysler to Landy, that has 2 short external cracks near a core plug that show up in a magnyflux check, but the block did hold up to 40+ pounds of air pressure during a pressure test, also there aren't any signs that the block ever seeped water where the hairlines  are located.  The machine shop felt that the block could have even been cast that way and that the cracks probably didn't go all the way through the block and would run ok as they are, being that it held up to a 40psi pressure test and it had appeared that the block had been run like that. The main web, lifter gallery, cylinders and all other areas checked out 100%.

I had the block, crank, rods, pistons, cylinder heads, rocker stand assemblies pushrods, Landy modified intake (which you bought since), the chrome Hooker headers, the custom oil pan and the pair of original hemi super stock AFB carburetors, and the price was $16,500. I did hold the engine for you for about a year after I first got it, as you did make appointments to see it but were never able to follow thru to come out and check it out, and I really thought it'd be cool to reunite with the car.

The headers and oil pan have since been sold, and I am now offering it with a stock intake (no carbs) and pan for $13,475.

Ron, it would be great if you got the car going again as per your plans, and it'd be real cool if you could make it to Delmar and show the car there the end of this month. There is supposed to be a lot of nostalgia displays and the like there, I'm sure many would appreciate seeing the car and hopefully recall the car and some of its history!

Steve P.

For sure it would be great to bring all the parts back together, but without LANDY it is still incomplete. This piece of racing nostalgia is great as it is, in my opinion. Taking it to this show would also be great, but just going back to the Landy paint and stripes will raise the interest of every racing soul on the planet.

And I am proud that you brought this all to DODGECHARGER.COM before anyone else. Troy and the boys have worked hard to make this a great site and having this charger part of the site is huge!!!

Wow interesting find but, I can't seem to find any info of Landy running a 70 Charger for even the short term?
I know this is an old part of the thread...

I read that mess on Facebook and what most fail to realize is exactly how long you've owned the car! They act like you just went out and found it recently and aren't willing to do anything to it except cover it up in the garage. That's where the comments about selling it to someone who could "do it right" come from. I don't suppose those people know about the deal with Landy when he looked at it at Carlisle either...

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Ghoste

Knowing the back story isn't important Troy.  Passing judgement is.

Steve P.

Another thing they fail to realize is that the car is owned by someone whom HAS SHOWN the car. Not some RICH CAT that wants to put it in his museum and make people pay to see it or just hidden away somewhere with no knowledge of the car in public view!!

Sometimes I just want to slap the taste out of peoples mouths and tell them after how sorry I am...

Hell, if he put a motor in it and stuck an 01 on the side and tried to jump the snake River Canyon it is still his car to do with it as he pleases!!!!!!  It's fine to say what you might do if it were yours, BUT IT'S NOT!!!!!!!!  :RantExplode:

Just so you know, there is a facebook page, Dick Landy- Tribute to a Drag Racing Legend, and the Sites post there periodically with updates.  It looks like they are still picking away at this great car bit by bit.

I dropped the group because of the attitudes.

Here is someone with one of Landy's car and they throw insults. It may be immature but I would not bother to post updates for the entire group to see. Whoever gave me shit EVERYTHING I posted would be blocked from them. Then they can go back to looking at old magazines with the Charger in it & tell one another how much of an asshole I am.

Live in the now.

I would do the same but you can't stop that crap, all you can do is smile and as you say, live in the now.
It's an amazing find to any Charger fan and well worth following the progress.

Bottomline is that we are all just "part-time" owners/caretakers of our vehicles and no matter how hard you try and hang on to it....someday you will be gone and another will take over ownership.  (Unless you decide to "take it with you" and have the car crushed and buried with you....)  This Charger is a piece of history that most all of us would love to own....which is why the opinion of others means very little...for the most part the "hate" comes from those that are jealous and envious of you...There will always be those that feel their opinions are so important that they have to share them with the world...they are just"Little people in a big world".

We now have the fender tag for this car. A friend and avid Mopar/Dick Landy fan was able to locate it for us. He once had a Dick Landy car of his own, so he knew the right people.  We also just received some die-cast models of our car, which were just released by Auto World.

How's the rest of your car doing, any updates?  Leon.
