I have a 1970 Dick Landy Hemi Charger. I've had it in storage for about 30 years. I've decided to sell it but I don't know what it's worth. Any advice?

                  ADDITIONAL INFO 8:11 PM, MAY 14, 2006

Thanks for the responses. I'd like to give a little history on the car.

About 30 years ago, I bought a machined, but not yet assembled 426 Hemi. I was looking for a Hemi car to put it in. I happened to see this Charger in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Landover, MD. I located the owner who said he would sell. He couldn't race anymore because he was going blind. He told me it was a Dick Landy car. At that point, I didn't know the significance of that. He had pulled the Hemi and installed a 440, he said because it didn't need to be rebuilt as often as a Hemi. I remember he said it has 5.33 gears, an acid-dipped body and a 5,000 RPM stall converter. I had not noticed until I got a response to my original posting that the VIN number on the sheet under the rear seat does not match the number on the original bill of sale I was given. I checked the VIN number inside the windshield, and it matches the Chrysler bill of sale, not the number under the seat. Over the years, I have heard that Dick Landy had some cars that he toured with to educate other racers. These may have been cars other than what he raced. I was told by the seller, 25 or 30 years ago, that it was a Dick Landy car, but I have done nothing to verify or document this. I still have the Hemi I bought before the car, but I never assembled it or did anything with it. Some people have told me that none of the factory race cars, or Landy cars, still have the original engines, because they were always trying new ones. I have the original Chrysler bill of sale. I believe the car has never been titled or driven on the street. The VIN number on the bill of sale, and on the dash at the windshield, is XS29ROG207150. The car had Hemi emblems until they were stolen, so I'm sure it is an original Hemi car. The fender tag is missing. I don't know if it was there when I bought the car. It may have been stolen also. I was originally going to build and install the Hemi, paint the car, and drive it on the street. Now, I think I'm kinda glad I didn't. I'll add more pictures later.

Thanks for all the responses and guidance.

WELL FOR STARTERS i WOULDN'T TAKE THE FIRST OFFER !!
Looks to be in exceptional condition , You may want to contact a few collectors first. I wouldn't rush this sale.  As for a price I'm guessing you'll do OK.

Something like that should go to a big auction like Barrent Jackson. Theres no telling what somebody might pay, $100,000 would not surprise me. It not to clean but you did not even wash it so its hard to tell. How did you get it and why was it not driven? How many miles and is anything wrong. Those are what the pros like to know. You have something there. Be careful and Good Luck.

Wow is that ever cool.  I never knew Landy ran a Charger in 70.  Anyone have any track pics of this car?

TruckDriver

WOW! You got a car worth some major bucks there! That would be cool to have for sure! :yesnod:

WOW :o what a find! Personally, I wouldn't wash or touch anything before getting a few people in to look at it. The sheet in the seat does not match the Chrysler document you posted(That's a Hemi car). The sheet looks like it calls for a B5 exterior, which you can see coming through the Landy type paint job. The white Bee stripe is also different from what the sheet calls for. Any chance of seeing the dash VIN and possibly the fender tag?

I would love to hear more about it and see more pictures.

Wow interesting find but, I can't seem to find any info of Landy running a 70 Charger for even the short term?

mopar_madman

I think he had a brother that used to run with him, maybe he was the one running it, awesome find if its authentic I would contact landy himself he may want it back for a museum piece.

I don't recall any pictures of Mike with such a car either.  It's quite possible that they began work on the car and then threw their full effort into the 70 Challenger for the new Pro Stock program?
I don't think Dick gets too sentimental about any of his old cars.  He might authenticate it but he doesn't seem to be one to keep things around.

Get it authenticated before you touch it. You could be sitting on a gold mine and any attempt to "fix" could substantially hurt its value. If it is an actual Dick Prepped car - its money in the bank. I haven't seen any shots of Dick running a 1970 Charger, but that's nothing. The Challenger was getting all the ink. Even the magazines rom the day covered the Challenger and ignored the B bodies.
But get an expert to go over the car to verify it. Money well spent.

y3chargerrt

Why does the broadcast sheet and the Chrysler paper work show different vins? Broadcast sheet shows a 440 R/T and the other paperwork says Hemi? I'm not beating on you just curious.

Anyone know where dealer 92101 was?

Alaskan_TA

It is pretty common to find a broadcast sheet for a different car like this. Have you looked under the front bucket seats for more? Behind the glove box insert? You may find more, hopefully one that matches.  :yesnod:

Please consider sending the other one to Chris at the 1970 Charger Registry as well.

VERY cool car, I know who has the Landy Challenger.  ;)

If I am reading it correctly, it says Chrysler transfered ownership to themselves.  :yesnod: I would guess that they gave it to Dick or at the very least used it for promotional purposes?

The VON starts with a Q, so it was a special order for some reason, my bet is "public relations", but we would need to see a matching broadcast sheet, window sticker or advance dealer shipping notice to know for sure.  :yesnod:

VERY cool find!

This could be a huge find!! Definitely don't mess with it. I'd see if you could get Dick Landy to check it out. And I can't believe I'm saying this but from a value perspective it wouldn't hurt to have Galen Govier authenticate the car as well.

Based on the VIN it is a HEMI car. The "Q" at the beginning of the order number suggests that the car was designated by Chrysler as an Executive Lease or Public Relations car. If you had the original broadcast sheet that would confirm.

The broadcast sheet under the seat is not for that car. It is commmon to find another cars sheet in your car. What is interesting is that the "other" 70 Charger R/T is a Y09 Export car (rare) and moreover it is a Y11 order which means it was ordered by a US Military person stationed outside of North America and they had it shipped to him/her. This sheet is unique given the export/military order aspect and I highly recommend sending a clear copy of the sheet to the 70 Charger Registry to be decoded and added to the Registry database.

Back on the car itself, I agree with others, if legit this would be the kind of car that would bring out the high $$ collectors and would be the type of car profiled in the Mopar magazines.

If there is anything we at the 70 Charger Registry can do to help just let us know.

Very cool find!  Welcome to the site & good luck with your decision

Yeah, I wouldnt take the first, second or third offer

Blown70

I say keep it, you have had it this long keep it around.  If you want to sell... My advice would be to Fix it then contact Barrett_Jackson.  Put the Hemi in it that you have.  I am willing to bet you would get a LARGE sum of money from someone.

Contact dick landy and see if he has any info or stories about the car.

Another set of the same opinions you're hearing:

--  Don't mess with anything, even to "improve" it.  Don't do any more than brush the dust off and gather up the paperwork & spare parts.

--  If it's legit, then this is a BIG deal and there will be magazine articles about it.  And people will wanna know the whole backstory.

--  It's hard to assign a value to this offhand but it's probably six figures.  You might not wanna even sell this thing right away, but rather wait until the story has had a chance to get out & settle a bit.  When people don't know that a car still exists, it can take a little while for the hobby to figure out what it's worth when it comes back on the scene.

terrible one
