Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

But by whom?  It hasnt been made clear if he ever drove it... or brother, etc. or nobody at all, for all we know it could have been built and never finished. Without someone saying this on record, who is to say how it was or wasn't used?  ::)

Did you see the photos earlier in the thread that show the car racing at Dallas with Butch Leal driving and Landy sitting on the sidelines watching?  You're right, without Landy's blessing that doesn't prove that this was the car but the circumstantial evidence was pretty overwhelming.

I was sorry to hear about Dick. I guess we shouldn't be surprised. A lot of us noted how he didn't look well. I was surprised just the same. I had hoped to do more business with Mr. Landy. I still may with D.L.I. I may have just been a momentary thorn in Mr. Landy's side, but I consider it an honor that he spent a little of his valuable time with me. By the way, he did apologize for being short with me at the beginning of this whole authentication process and I did accept. My timing may not always be the best, but after having the car sit for over 25 years, I got it authenticated at the last Chryslers at Carlisle that Mr. Landy attended. This may be the last car to have received this honor. Again, I would like to express my gratitude to all those from this site who advised and guided me. Without you, I would never have gotten this done.

I think Dick Landy doesn't get all the credit he deserves for all he accomplished and for all he contiributed to the hobby for us Mopar freaks. I even think he had a lot to do with the current Mopar craze and ridiculous Mopar collector car prices. These prices come from the reputation the underdog Mopars established back in the day. A lot of the race track and Streetfighter credibility came from the R&D and racing success of Mr. Landy and his crew. I don't know that a lot of people are aware that Dick was responsible for a lot of the research and development that made the Hemi so successful and I think the Hemi's success and mystique are what's making the Mopar Muscle cars so desirable. I think he may actually be responsible for the development of the twin plug heads. His clinics all over the country passed on this info to other racers and that's what made Mopars so dominant then and desirable today.

Rest In Peace, Mr. Landy and know that you deserve all the praise you've received. You are a true legend and we Mopar guys are honored and grateful that you chose Mopar.

There's been some recent discussion on this thread about the car's history. It is a true Dick Landy car and I have the official notarized certificiation to prove it. It's the only '70 Charger he had. His usual driver was Bob Lambeck. Bob's name can still be seen printed on the car as the driver. I understand Bob is actually responsible for this Charger's existance. Dick had gone primarily to the Challenger for the '70 racing season. This may have been because they're lighter or because his sponsors from the factory wanted him to or both. Bob told my wife that Dick allowed him to pick a car for the '70 racing season, I guess to reward him for his success driving Dick's cars. Bob chose the Charger. Thank you, Bob. I guess he loves Chargers as much as we do. I think they're one of the best looking cars ever made. I'm going to try and contact Bob again and hopefully get him to comment on DC.com. My wife, Rose, did guide him here before and he got a kick out of it.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Something like that should go to a big auction like Barrent Jackson. Theres no telling what somebody might pay, $100,000 would not surprise me. It not to clean but you did not even wash it so its hard to tell. How did you get it and why was it not driven? How many miles and is anything wrong. Those are what the pros like to know. You have something there. Be careful and Good Luck.

Thanks for the update. :)
That would be really great if Mr. Lambeck had a chance to stop in, say hi & swap some stories of the car...or just of those days in general.

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Man oh man. I was just catching up on this thread and read the Landy died. That sucks.. I was on a long weekend when the news must have been traveling around.  RIP Dick..

Yes. I'm sorry. I asked my wife a long time ago to give you the okay. I'm having a hard time typing cuz I just finished slapping her around and my hand hurts. But not as much as her face.  :icon_smile_wink: Just kidding. (About some of it...) I would be honored if you used my car on your website.

I just picked up the current issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines and they had a little thing in there on Landy.  It didn't have a picture of the 70 car, which would make sense if Lambeck drove it, but there was a photo of the 69 in there.  Some of the other cars as well.  All in all, a nice little article and deserved tribute to the man.

Helloooo, is anyone still there?   Just a little update. As most of us know, Carlisle is coming up, and we've decided to take the car again this year. Last year, we only had the car on the showfield on Sunday because we spent most of the weekend chasing down Dick to get the car authenticated. This year, we plan to show the car all three days of the event. We got some criticism last year for not doing much to make the car show well. We were just trying to show it's real condition when pulled from storage after 20-some years. We thought it was time to repair some of the damage from the towing accident. We bought a replacement bumper at Carlisle last year and we've put that on the car. The grille assembly had been removed before the accident and was in okay condition, so we put that back on. We removed the hood and hammered it out some and it actually latches now. We're going to try to get a replacement hood before the show. The rest of the car is in pretty good shape. Some may have noticed the unique Cragar on the front. We found the mate which had been removed because it was slightly damaged in the accident. We're hoping to have that repaired and back on the car. We're also going to try to get the engine running. If any of you go, please stop and say hello. Hope to see you there.  :2thumbs:
