Did Dick Landy say anything about wanting it back if it is his car?

No.

What happens if Dick says it's the real deal? Are you still selling?

Cool car, and I think it's the real deal.
I don't know, I'll have to see how things play out, but I'll probably end up doing the same thing most of us would.

thanks for the updates. Have any pics of the engine? Do you know when the last time it ran? Any pics of landy with the car?
Dave
I haven't taken any pictures of the engine, but I will.  It runs pretty wicked but doesn't look like much. It ran when I parked it but that was a loooong time ago and I haven't tried again since.  We took several pictures of Landy looking over the car for the authentication. we'll post them after we hear back from him.

Restore it and keep it?  :icon_smile_cool:

I should've gone to PA just for the chance to see it in person.  It looks even better in the most recent pics.  Once again... amazing piece of drag racing history you have there.

I would try to keep it as original as possible. The wheels need rechromed, and the front end damage needs addressed. It's a hard call, I'd want to keep it, but maybe it should be at Big Daddy's museum?

Sites as for you thinking your car doesn't deserve to be on display at Carlisle, well you can see by the responses here and at Moparts that people are very interested. What you have (we hope) is a time capsule, a unrestored, unmolested, piece of history. If Dick verifies the car as one of his own, you  might want to get a hold of the people at the Chrysler Museum and see about getting it displayed there for a while. I only wish I would have seen it while I was at Carlisle  :-\  Best of luck and I hope you get the call from Dick very soon.

wasn't Dick's '68 found a few years ago? anyone know where the '69 is, or his '68 Coronet?

If it was me, I would get the motor running good and fix the damaged front end and keep it. This thing is a piece of history. It should stay that way. Drive it to big shows and show it. Enjoy the car and drive it. Let other people gauck at it at shows.

I think it's the real deal as well.

I'd document the hell out of it.....then restore it.......then sell it at Barrett Jackson Auction.....then retire  :Twocents:

Restoring it easier said then done. That takes big money to do it right. Figure $50,000+ at least. If on a Budget I say just fix front end damage & install cleaner Cragars & keep unrestored. Just my opinion. Besides I like them unrestored, just look at my original 24,000 unrestored 70 R/T Charger with door dings & burnt edges. Thats the way I like them. LEON. :icon_smile_big:

For a race car the $50,000 figure would be on the very conservative side. Not like on a normal run the cost of a reproduced door panel or air cleaner can be amortized over 1,000 or more sold sets. And with so little in documentation and pictures (like his '68s and '69s) it would be hard to verify the details.
I would hold on to be 100% sure of its authenticity and then clean it up and leave it as it is. The tired old adage of "...its only original once" comes to mind. It could easily break you to restore it to the way Landy rolled it out of his shop on race day one. And unlike the normal hobby where the rarer the car (colors, options, drivetrain, etc) the more money, for race cars the more notable and remembered the car and its accomplishments the better.
So you could wind up spending over $100,000 to restore her and have a car that not many people know about or remember. While for us Charger nuts this is a stunning piece of history, the masses will think fake - especially if Dandy Dick is saying "never had a '70" .
Wait for confirmation for Dick.

blackcharger

I definetly wouldn't restore it. The interior looks to good to touch. I would rechrome the original wheels, and fix the front end damage. Stabilize the surface rust, clean the paint up, and redo the lettering. Leave it as original as possible.

DICK (head) is most likely wanting someone to PAD is pocket to provide authentication of the car.  WHATTA PUTZ.  Sorry, that just ticks me off.

BEST OF LUCK with your car and I am sure it is the real thing.  I LOVE THE CAR AND THOSE PICS...... and story.

Tom

That could be the case....but then that would lead us to believe that anybody with a well
done clone could go to Landy with a sweaty wad of cash and get their car "authenticated" by him if
they had enough money  ???

sites

Well, we got the papers. Dick has confirmed what I think most of us already knew... it's genuine  :icon_smile_big:. I had no doubt, but I was afraid he'd see something that would keep him from being convinced. What a relief. We're hoping to get copies of all the info Dick's got that he compared the car to. The contract he sent us appears to say that we must restore the car to the way he had it if we display the car with his name on it. I think the first thing we should do is have the Hemi built and in the car. If we have dLi build the motor, it'll be a true Dick Landy Hemi in a Dick Landy car. What do you think? Since Dick apparently wants it restored, hopefully he'll let the information flow. I don't even know if he ran it as a four speed or automatic. The car's had a lot of B&M stickers, so I'm guessing an auto. I bought a new bumper with mounting brackers at Carlisle. I already had a bumper, but not the backets. It'll all have to be acid-dipped. I need a new hood, too. Lots of decisions to make. Keep, sell, restore, drive, show, race, etc. I don't even know if I should put my money into it or let someone else take it on as a project or investment. Any advice?

Check out the pics of Dick checking out the car at Carlisie. Now you can see the elusive accident damage  :-[ (and the cool can).

Very cool car, Dandy Dick sounds like a dic*head though.  I think I'd sell it and not have to deal with him.

Thanks for putting up all those pics guys.  I suppose in my case it's a biased case of hero worship, but I don't think Landy has been too unreasonable at all.  I would think that a lot of people have tried to make money off is name over the years.  For that matter, there was a fake car making the rounds a few years back so people HAVE made money off of his name and reputation.  He certainly has a right to protect it.   Your name and rep are all you really have aren't they?

greenpigs

Not sure if landy is a jerk, but I call shotgun when you get the car running!

Or Shotgun on whatever you buy from selling the car! :icon_smile_big:

I would do the auction thing like I said before and buy a nice Mopar with the money.

If you kept it, would you drive it or race it?

How exciting would a trailer queen be?

Landy sounds reasonable to me. Not everyone is Ronnie Sox. Big Daddy is know for his temper too. And The Dany One always seemed to me to be the type not to take anybodys crap.  If you have the resources, I'd restore it. Having DLI redo the HEMI would be perfect. I'd approach Landy on the prospect of helping fund the resto. I like to drive my cars, but I don't think I'd take this  piece of history out on the roads.
Thanks for the updates, and keep them comming!

I think Dick would be more partial to having any "funding" flowing in the other direction, if you know what I mean. ;)

BTW, the lady on the golf cart wouldn't happen to be Mrs. Landy, would it?
