My Charger does not have the rear quarter/sail panel moldings. A bloke has them up on Ebay for $199. THey don't appear to be available from Year One or Charger Specialties. How much would you say is s fair price?

They do look good don't they?
I think it'll really make the rear quarter view look good.
I have no vinyl roof, so it would break up the paint a bit..

That is the going rate for them.  I have physically seen/touched these pieces.  Gunslinger Products makes them. They are very high quality & are made well.  Well worth the price IMHO

Hopefully that will be fixed soon. Jason (the owner) just moved to within 45 minutes of me. :D

Better idea: thank God you don't have them, weld up the holes and paint the roof so it won't rust out under a vinyl moisture trap someday. ;D

Hey guys were the check  moldings only available as part of the vinyl roof package? Obviously you couldn't have a vinyl roof without them on the join, but I have seen a stack of them on vinyl delete cars and think they look right? Could you specify the moldings as an option on vinyl roof delete cars? or are all the cars with them on ex vinyl roof cars?

No Limey, you couldn't get just the mouldings without the vinyl top. A lot of people remove the vinyl but leave the trim because it looks pretty good. I don't know that anyone would drill holes in a non-vinyl top car just to add them but you never know. FYI, the factory had to do more work on the hardtop cars so the roof seams are finished differently. On a vinyl top car they didn't bother painting the roof and used crummy filler on the roof seam since the top would cover any imperfections.

There were a few cars that got built with "painted on" vinyl tops.  (Basically they took a hardtop car, added the trim, and sprayed flat black paint on the roof above the trim instead of adding the vinyl.)  The factory/dealers did this to save money sometimes, but the painted tops actually held up better than the vinyl-covered ones did.  There were never a very large number of cars done like this, though.

Some Hollywood cars (like "General Lee" Chargers from the TV series, the yellow-green DMCL Chargers, etc.) kept the vinyl top trim simply because the builders were getting so many vinyl top Chargers to start with.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most of the cars you see with the trim still in place now are probably vinyl top cars.  The owners sometimes take off the top & paint the roof, but leave the trim on.

limey

So..unless whoever repainted mine bothered to remove a vinyl top, smooth over the roof to a higher standard, remove and discard the check moldings, fill the mounting holes and paint over....mine was probably a vinyl roof delete car?
(I have no fender tag or build sheet...  :icon_smile_sad:) ) so its all guess work and probables....
Cheers, Nick

Yeah, probably.

Although I don't think the car would be "vinyl roof deleted," but rather the optional vinyl roof was not ordered.  Those vinyl tops were popular on Chargers just like a lot of other cars in that era, but a painted steel roof is not exactly rare either.

The easy way to tell is to open the trunklid & look up at the backside of the quarter panel skin.  (The location of the vinyl top trim is well within reach and eyesight once you've gotten your head & shoulders into the trunk.)  If there were once trim holes on the panel that have been filled in at some later date, you should be able to see the evidence of the filling work pretty easily.

Oh right....I thought the vinyl roof was standard..there are so many of them around....

smasherofall

my 68 didn't come with a vinyl top, but while sanding in the c-pillar area I found what looks to be pilot holes about 1/16th in diameter in the area where the trim would mount. Did all cars have these?
