Going with a sixpack setup.

Hey guys, currently have a 68 charger RT 440.

Its been on and off my mind lately if i should put a six pack setup on it.

What do you guys think. For those who have sixpack setups

How much more fuel is it going to use over my standard 4bbl 440.
How much more performance. ?

I love how loud my charger is ATM, have 2.5inch flowmasters on it, would a sixpack setup/ tripple carbs make it even louder?

Thanks.

Ghoste

If you could teach yourself to just drive on the center two barrel, you could theoretically use less fuel, but you won't do that because it's fun to feel the outboard carbs drop in.  How often that happens is up to you , so fuel consumption is going to be determined by your driving.  Mine uses about the same fuel as before but I really dont monitor too closely because it isnt what I bought the car for.  My guess is 10 or 12 mpg with 3.54 final drive.  As for more performance, it will make more power with a four barrel and a good intake.  How much more overr a stock intake and a stock oem four barrel?  I dont know, a little more.  The factory rated difference was 15 horse and a couple of tenths.  It wont make it any difference in sound level.  The biggest thing it will add is a wow factor when you pop the hood and the kick in the pants when the outer carbs open.  Its fun but if you want best performance and bang for buck, there are alternatives.

Thanks for the reply mate.

Yea thats what im more so thinking, am i just doing it more so for the wow factory in having a six pack setup in my charger, i probably am.

It sure does look good, but is dropping a few K to make it look good under the hood, maybe, perhaps? Or not.
Really stuck on this one lol.

I have had the same thought about rounding up a 6 pack set up  :2thumbs:

There is one listed up my way ( about 3 hour drive one way  :brickwall: )

He started at $4000 and seems to keep dropping his price now down to $3500

Description
Edelbrock 440 six pack assembly: three 2bbl Holley carbs, Edelbrock aluminum intake, linkage, fuel lines, new K&N air filter, hemi orange air cleaner assembly. Ran terrific on street/strip car.
For those asking, the numbers are
4382, 4375 and 4383 so they are 1970 4 speed carbs.

Then I think I still have other stuff to get done first on my car that I could better use the money on so for now I will just dream and kick myself in the pants later that I missed a deal now

I ran one for about 20 years. It wears out the hood hinges and slows you down. (Everyone wants to see it and they want to talk about it.)

JR

I had one for 20 years also. Not really worth the "wow" factor unless it's worth it to you.

I could care less what people think about my ride, but the inevitable second question that followed was always "is it a REAL Six Pack car?" That got old. The only guys who were "wowed" by it were guys I didn't want to hang around anyways.

If you want to level up the wow factor, I'd go with the look alike 6 pack that's actually an EFI setup.

I've always wanted to do a six pack setup and should have bought one when they first started reproducing them years ago and I think the pricing was around $1200 for a complete setup but the now price tag anymore is just to steep for my blood, if I had more cash flow I would do it in a heartbeat!

Hard to gauge any performance increase without knowing more about the Engine itself ? because if the engine isn't capable of using the extra airflow the six-pack provides it may even go slower depending on tuning/setup ?

Heads and Camshaft determine how far the Valves open and for how long they stay open..... the "amount" of Air & Fuel that gets into the engine to go BOOM and create pressure to push the piston down ?
The height of the Pistons also determines how much that Air & Fuel gets "compressed"... and how quickly peak pressures are reached from that compression's incipient start point to push the Piston down ?
just say'in...
far more going on than just bolting a six-pack on to your engine and expecting a performance increase as a "given" ? and you may get absolutely NO performance increase whatsoever if the engine can NOT "utilize" the extra Airflow the six-pack provides ?

Do you know what Pistons/Heads and Camshaft were used in your engine ?
and
NO.... Carbs don't typically/normally effect "sound" out the Exhaust
Only wimps wear Bowties !

Only way to know if there is power to be found is to establish a baseline on your car, install the 6 pack setup, and then test again.  Otherwise it's just guesswork, and contrary to what the jeg's and summit catalog would have you believe, adding parts doesn't guarantee any gains...

Im a 6 pack fan. Love them. But if you are not able to tune carburetors blindfolded, you might not want to travel down the path. They are great, make great power, turn heads when the hood is up, but they take patience to setup properly.

Ghoste

As Dick Landy said, "take every problem you ever had setting up a carb and multiply it by three".

Nacho-RT74

I saved a file around where the tune up procedure for them is explained

If you run a stock 440 with 6BBL or Roadrunner Mopar cam, use correct linkage and for automatic a 145K T.C. setup and tune is straight forward as the 2300's are built for that. You can get darn good mileage and pull like a bull stomping on it. You'll get tired of guys wanting to look at it, think about it you lift the hood and all you see is a big oval air cleaner. Next they ask you to remove the air cleaner to "really see it". You start remembering the kinda shady guys who have drifted over and the fact that you know the whole thing could be pulled off in ten minutes..... :scratchchin:

hemi68charger

I'll add my  :Twocents:

I have had a 6 pack on any given car of mine for over 30 years. My 1st factory high performance mopar back in the 80's was a '70 v-code 440 six pack Charger R/T, my daily driver for many years..... I absolutely loved it. It actually got decent gas mileage, especially going from place to place on the highway, you're driving a 440 2bbl. But when you kicked it in the butt, she was gone !!! You go from 350 cfm to an additional 1000 cfm like that, 1350 cfm !!!

From my experience, 6packs need vacuum, so unless you plan on tweeking on the carbs, I would go with as an OEM camshaft spec as possible. After all, the factory 6packs were badass as they were. With new or recondition carbs, I always leave the outboards alone in terms of the fuel/air mixture screws in the base plate. Sometimes, depending on your tranny and other conditions, you may need to play around and test the outboard pod springs on how fast or slow you want them to kick in.. If you dial in the center carb good, leave it alone. I always had my choke operational. One thing about a 6pack, if they are not run in a while, the fuel evaporates from the bowls. So, don't be alarmed if you have to crank it for a while.. It is normal.

The 6 pack won't make the exhaust any louder. What will be heard will be the roar from the intake when the outboard carbs open up..... You'll know it..  :icon_smile_big:

I love six packs !!

Your worried about gas and noise ?  :smilielol:

It might change the sound of the exhaust.  I changed my original 4 barrel carb out last fall for a new Edelbrock AVS2 carb.  It definitely changed the sound of the exhaust.   I noticed it right away.  My wife even said the Charger sure sounds different than it used to.  She wouldn't even know where the carb is located so she is NOT a motorhead.  It isn't louder though.  Maybe a little quieter?  I run Magnaflow turbo mufflers and love the sound.

By the way, I love the new AVS2.  It runs much better than it ever has.  I have owned the car for 40 years this month and know it well.  I have a regular AVS on my Model A street rod and will be changing that out for the new AVS2 this summer.  I highly recommend the AVS2.

I have had a few sixpack cars. I love multiple carbs on anything. Once dialed in they are awesome. I bet it has been 15 years since I turned any screws on my sixpack car. Just fired it up Friday for the first time after sitting all winter. Always makes me feel like I am 16 again when it fires.

Yeah, but then you look at the passenger and realize your over 50. Overweight, bald, grey and could not get laid in Mexico at a Whore house with a fist full of viagra.  :brickwall:
