Examples of 1968 hood turn signals?

Well, after digging through the internet and U-tube to find "stock" examples of how Charger hood turn signals should appear in 1968, I'm still not sure about how they should appear. I'm fairly certain my originals were blacked out everywhere on the body of the casting, except for the actual lens itself. I'm also fairly certain that there is also a portion of the hood-indent that continues past the light that should be flat black as well. Can anybody confirm that or provide photographic evidence of what "original" actually looks like?

Trivial stuff, I realize, but I've worked hard over my many years of ownership to keep it in proper form. It bugs me when I know it's not.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tan top : Thank you. The replacement lenses I got back in 2008 were all amber. Need to add the  blackout sections somehow.

yes mine were all amber too, the ones I bought about 20 years ago were made by charger specialities ,I also  had to mask them up with fineline tape & spray them black. did not have the rubber bulb socket boots either on the repops I had. think Megaparts repoped the boots 10 years back give or take   :scratchchin:

yes the black continues past the lens,

Short of taking them out of the car and painting them properly, I cut a piece of electrical tape (almost the same dull-black finish as the decal) to the correct length and covered the entire lens. I then proceeded to carefully cut out the lens indent with a very fine Exacto-like razer pen. Not perfect but not bad.  Looks much better than the giant blob of amber at the end of each indent.  I'm guessing that mine don't have the boots either.  Hard to beat NOS, but....not always available.

Wow! Megaparts wants $200 for a complete set now (w/o shipping). I guess I'll live w/o the boots. I'll wrap the damn things in electrical tape before forking over the $200.

I'm going to redo the blackouts on my hood in the next few days and this time I'll include the blackouts on the lenses. I wasn't aware the black continued onto the lens when I did mine originally.
I'll make a few sets of the decals if it they out ok.
Let me know if you're interested in a set and I'll keep you updated.
Gotta love a '69

Most Chargers at car shows are solid amber no black, I did not know about the black on the lens, until about 15 years ago, now I have to put the black trim lenses on.

I don't know if they still do it, but about 6 years ago I bought ten of the rubber boots separately, forgot the vendor at the moment, Could have been BE&A.

I have been at the same shows, parked next to an original owner 68 Charger. He does not have the black out decals in the hood depressions. I talked to him about it ten years ago, he will not put them on, he said his car did not have them when he bought it new, so they are not going on now, news to me!!

What to get really silly? What color are the door buttons on your '68? They shouldn't be chrome.

Are you referring to me?

Not specifically.  All the original 1968 cars I've seen have black door-handle buttons. Chrome versions evidently didn't appear until 1969.

My car is a 69 built Aug 7 68 and it has black door handle buttons

Wow, my '68 is from July 5 of '68. Leftover parts from prior year?

8WHEELER

Yes many early 69's came with black buttons, every 68 I have seen came black.

OK, now I'm really confused ?
WTF is all this talk about "black" paint on the Hood Mounted Turn Signal Lenses ? or did I miss something here ?

Mine's a Nov 1968 production 1969 Charger R/T SE, and one of my turn indicators is broke so I was thinking of ordering a repop ? But I'll be dammed if there ain't any "black" paint I can find anywhere on my originals ? just the Amber Lenses ?

If you look at the brown Charger hood about half way down this post, you can see the flat surface on the amber lens is black, only the recessed area is amber from the factory. Most of the repop units going back over 20 years did not put on the black. The black wore off over the years.

myk

So...if we were to go buy repro hood signals, which brand or company should we be looking at?  Or, are they all the same?  I've been meaning to have hood signals again but can't tell the difference between all of the signals on evil-bay; the only similarity they all have is costing about $200 a set...

lloyd3

Most of the re-pops I've seen are a poor copy of the originals. The entire unit is plastic where the originals had a metal frame w/a plastic lens.  The size of the lens isn't quite right either. They are clearly better than nothing, but....they're mostly not wonderful. When I bought mine in 2008 they were $65, now they want $200 for what looks to be a slightly better version. The picture earlier in this post of an "original" is all you have to see to realize how different the first reproductions were.  Upon reflection, the latest versions actually look much better.  Flea Bay has some decent looking ones for $125. None of them seem to have the gasket the originals came with to keep water from leaking through, however.

Ghoste

I bought a set of the latest repops and they had a basic and deluxe kit.  I got the deluxe and it isn't bad but it isn't great either.  The basic had no black, no boots and no gasket.  Mine don't fit perfectly but few reproduction parts do anymore it seems.

Challenger340

Mine are original to the car which has been garaged most of it's life, they are metal body with a plastic lens.
I've had them out and looked them over closely, and I can't find any Black paint remaining anywhere ? I mean you'd think there would be a small flake or something left somewhere ? nada... zilch... donut.

But then again they DO "fit" the holes in the Hood pretty darn well... and being a factory Black Car maybe they weren't painted ? although I doubt that !

Here's my old original set

It looks to me like they used to have black paint. I wish I'd had the foresight to have saved mine back in 2008, but they got lost in the fray of chasing parts and projecting costs to the insurance folks. There was just so-much to juggle that I'd never done before (work, car, family).  My original hood could likely have been saved but the lure of "new" seemed far-more attractive then.  The project took on more and more costs and work, so everything was up in the air. Thirty thousand later and I still find stuff I'd like to have done. Older and wiser now, hopefully.
