Hey guys, I plan on taking my car to the strip next month and I always wanted to mount an in car camera to record the passes.  Is there something out there that is small, not terribly expensive and can be triggered remotely on demand? I did some searches and I see the go pros and others but they are too big in my opinion.  Anyone have a setup like this already?

I have a knockoff gopro. Was 50 bucks and can suction cup it to the glass or rollcage mount it. Top speed so far is 155 on the suction cup exterior mounted.

Not bad quality for 50 bucks at the local hardware store.

Boy! I'd say pretty impressive for the money spent as well!  :o

wow! great vid first of all, and yes, very impressive for $50. Do you have any more info on the model and features? Is there a remote for it?

Also, will tech give me a hard time? the track I am going to used to be IHRA and now they are NHRA and from what I have heard from friends, they are a bit more strict with certain things.

Thanks!

Cost me more than $50, but the older GoPros are still excelllent and are pretty cheap now. Here is a sample of my GoPro Hero 5 Black video, in my LO23 Hemi Dart, mounted to my helmet. You have to make sure to set the video settings to HD to appreciate the clarity, but on a desktop monitor it is amazing. On an iPad, just so-so.

Mine is a proscan model pac2501. Paid 45 bucks plus tax at my local hardware store. Wifi, hdmi, remote access. Waterproof case. Happy with it. Looks just like a gopro

Thanks guys, while looking at go pro knockoffs, I ended up buying this one from Amazon, $39 bucks not including the SD card.

Now I just have to mount it safely so I don't have any issues with the tech inspection guys at the strip.

How long do the batteries last? I think I'd rather have a plug-in.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Not sure how long it will record continuously. Would probably run through many many memory cards before the battery dies. Between filming and being on standby-(screen off but awaiting record command) mine goes 8-10 hours at the track and i charge it at night.

I use my original GoPro Heros for sports (sometimes cars). I can get 50 minutes of 1080p video on 3.6 GB so a 64 GB card will hold over 16 hours(?). The battery is good for about 4. I learned long ago that rotating smaller cards is better than 1 massive card in case of a catastrophe. You can shoot 1080p on any decent speed 8-16GB card and just rotate them whenever you stop. The newer GoPros (and clones) with all the whiz bang features eat battery faster but also shoot in 4k which will eat up memory card space in no time. 4K will also require fast (ie expensive) cards.

If I were to permanently mount them inside a car I'd definitely go with a wired setup. The cameras are cheap because they just feed a signal to something smarter. I have been testing $10 arduino-like wifi cams recently which may be handy outside the vehicle.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.
