My wife and I watched all these auctions live on the DISH network.  I think that he should have taken the $3.5 million and smiled all the way to the bank.

none of the "other" racecars bid "no reserve" to $500K & we're to believe there were parties interested in the Petty Superbird north of $3M

Are we really to believe that the Superbird (the only car with a reserve) would generate a legitimate bid TEN TIMES that of the 1971 Road Runner?   Remember that the 1971 is represented as a Daytona 500 and championship winning car.  So its no slouch.    All the no-reserve cars brought more or less what good race cars bring.     That is still respectable money.

Being that the Superbird had a high reserve (we don't know the number), it's entirely plausible that the house bids the Superbird up to near the reserve, hoping for a fish.   If they hook one, they try to get the seller to lower the reserve and hammer the car sold.   They worked it hard, but it did not happen.

The worst case is the Superbird was there with a reserve to generate a ton of publicity - which it did.    All people are talking about now is the number it bid to.   Well, until the car is declared "SOLD", that bid number is pretty much meaningless.

i'd take any of the drag pieces over it, and am stupefied how the '71 petty car out hammered any of them

i pictured the petty bird as a half million dollar piece, maybe six hundred large if things were corrected on it

in my opinion, the bird would bookend well with the K and K car in tim's museum, so the amount he would pony up should be a better idea of its true worth

The 1971 Sox Cuda just beat out the 1971 Road Runner on price.    The last golden era Daytona 500 winning car that sold privately several years back was in this same price range.

The Petty cars sold prime time 7:10 cst starting with the Superbird.  It had about a 5-7 minute on screen auction time, with a prelude at the beginning of the show at 7.  The rest of the cars had about 2-3 minute screen time.

Only reason the Cuda sold more was because it was a street car with a hemi vin.  Everything else was a biw.
