timing issues

hey guys i got an issue.for my 318,larry shepherd says to install the distributor drive gear pointing towards the front drivers side intake bolt.so i do it like that and my rotor points towards the same bolt obviously but,on the next page it says to position the #1 spark plug tower pointing right down the middle of the engine.how would this work? it seems your #1 wire would be off by a half inch.maybe I'm just wetoded but if someone knows what I'm talking about could you clue me in?thanx

put your motor to top dead center then mark where your # 1 plug is then put your rotoe button just to the left or right of where # 1 is and slide the distributer in it should turn slightly when you set it in. beacuse of the gears
