Exactly. People get bored or run out of cash when half way through...and then they sell a body ( with all the stripped out engine , interior etc) thats largely rust free and done....and often they sell at a big loss compared to whats been spent. There have been a couple for sale like this on this very forum. The 70 above cant really be bought cheap enough when compared to an unfinished project....or even a largely rust free example at 10K more than they are asking but needed most other things would be far better value.

You could buy a solid Rust Free one that is done & save yourself a lot of money over Restoring a rust bucket. By the time people restore a rustbucket & then figure that out, it's to late. LEON.

BINGO!

Not everyone has the 50k to 100k that it costs these days to buy a Charger R/T these days. There are a lot more people who have the 20k buy in money to get a project like this and restore it,and a matching numbers R/T would be the right project to do. They will have the same 50k to 100k in it when it is done, depending on the level of the restoration, but they will know what they have when it is done. There are a lot of perfumed pigs out there with shiney paint on them trading hands for big money these days. Rust free Charger R /Ts are not growing on trees, and there not making anymore of them. I have two 70 Charger R /Ts from California and both of them still need metal work and some panel replacement.

Just buy a roadrunner/coronet running driving car for 20k and call it a day.

alfaitalia

Far rather pay 15K for this below than 25 for that....and it might go for rather less. Its apples and oranges but you see what I'm saying I'm sure.

It looks like he cornered the market on Green 70 Charger R/T project cars!

hemi-hampton

That one looks like a better deal then his last POS. From what I've seen lately some one will buy that now. Then probably spend the next 10 years putting $50k+ into it. LEON.

It's easy for you and Leon to say, just go buy a rust free perfect Charger R/T,because you guys did, most people don't have that option. They are probably not going to luck into rust free examples of real R/Ts like you did. Because you were lucky enough to buy rust free examples while they were still affordable, dosen't mean that every second generation Charger project should be repeatedly deemed junk,by you guys that were fortunate enough to have scored prime examples. I saw your car not that long ago, when you were considering possibly selling it,for sale for about four times more than what you paid for it. Just saying.

DanielRobert

Yeah, it's easy for people to say "just go spend 40-50 grand and be done with it." But no one is taking into account someone just wants to restore a car themselves. What would this forum be if everyone bought finished cars and no one bought a project they've always wanted? I think the 12-15 k range is max for that car if thats the one you really had your heart set on. I also don't like the P.O.S. label some guys like to put on every car thats not a rust free example. Bottom line is buy it for what you think it's worth to you, put the dollars that you feel it's worth into it to get the car you want, but don't expect anyone else to pay you for what you think it's worth at the end of your journey.

I'm not trying to bash anybody who scored a sweet original R/T or any other second generation Charger. In fact I would congratulate anyone who did, especially if they got a good deal on it. But even the two 70 Charger R/Ts ,one V code and one U code,I have both will need metal work and panel replacement, and they are right out of California. Should I junk them too, because they need work? Both the 70 Charger R/Ts in this thread are savable and can be restored, the asking prices are a bit optomistic, but the current market is crazy for Chargers right now. I have seen people on this site go to great lengths to save second generation Chargers in all states of rust damage and disrepair, and I applaude anyone who does! I parted out about 100 rusty New England Chargers back when there was no sheetmetal available to save them. Thanks to Auto Metal Direct, any second gereration Charger can be reconstructed, and there is no such thing as a second generation Charger parts car anymore.

hemi-hampton

Restoring a  rust bucket Charger yourself because you want to is fine with me & I'm glad AMD makes it possible. BUT, way to many people get in over there heads after 10+ years & $50k $75k or $100k+ into the half finished project. then they realize much more work, time & money then they though. They then realize these repo parts fit like crap & need modifications to even fit or work (unless your not fussy at all, most people are) People don't realize why the body shops charge so much to restore a Charger, especially the paint body work, so some say I'll do it myself in my garage, Now 10 years later of trying cut, splice, weld & make these parts work & fit, they now realize why a body shop charges so much. Some people will go the distance, determined to get it done & completely restored even if it takes 10 or 20 years & $50 to $100k. And feel real accomplishment when done. Congratulations. But, to many end up on ebay as a half finished project. Just know & be prepared for what your about to get yourself into. LEON.

Buying a restored one,is just as much of a gamble as fixing up a Charger like the ones in this thread. There is now way for the average enthuiest, who isn't an experienced body man to tell if they are buying a perfumed pig with shiney paint. Both of the grenn Chargers are in better than average shape compaired to other Charger projects I have seen. Atleast by buying one like this, you know what the car looked like before it was restored.

DanielRobert

In the grand scheme of things, an extra 15K into a car that has numbers matching or at least an original unrestored start can be worth it. It's not always about the money spent in the end with some people, it's about getting a certain car. Ya know, the ones that aren't in it as an investment. Hell, my ex-wife bought thousands of dollars of clothes/purses/shoes and can't get a damn penny for it all. It was worth it to HER though. To each their own.

These threads always generate a lot of comments like, "Well, I sure wouldn't pay that money for it!" and "Charger prices are all idiotic now."

Front-row tickets to a Justin Beiber concert aren't worth $5 to me.  But that doesn't prove it's a bad deal.  I am not a serious buyer.

Just curious, so how many here contemplating purchasing these type condition Vehicles have/own and are contemplating:
* A BIG Shop capable of storing the Car, and all the parts/pieces once dis-assembled
* A "Rotisserie" to place the Car on to facilitate the work once underway
* Adequate Tools, Compressor, know-how knowledge and skill sets
* A stable Job with wages that allows adequate off-time for a thousands of hours undertaking ?

or conversely,
* how many here believe they can resurrect these type vehicles adequately to their ultimate satisfaction at home, piece-meal on a garage floor ? over time, as time & money allows ?

Some people take great pride in a Charger that they restored themselves. Personally,I never drove one that I didn't build. I am glad to see more Chargers being saved, and that the parts are available to save them. Not all reproduction sheetmetal is junk or poor fitting. I have been building these cars since the late seventies, and I have run the gammit on Charger sheetmetal. I lived the days when there was not a single piece of reproduction tin for these cars. I remember when the only way to build a Charger in the rustbelt was to part out three or four cars to build one good one. While it may not be perfect, the AMD parts are a giant leap from the days when I made hand formed trunk, floor pans and lower quarter panel sections out of flat sheetmetal. I remember when I bought the first hand fabed Sherman lower half rear quarter repair panels when they first came out in the early eighties, and we were extatic that they finally offered some sheetmetal for us. The hobby has come a long way,and having fit everything from those crude Sherman panels to new AMD panels,to NOS sheetmetal,I can tell you they all needed work beyond just dropping them on to fit and look properly. I personally test fitted a bunch parts for AMD,and they have gone to great lengths tooling and retooling parts sometimes as many as 15 times on a single part to achieve the best possible fitment. The parts can only be as good as the parts they are tooled from.and most of us Mopar guys hoard their NOS parts like they are made of gold. I offered what I had for templating,as did some of my friends,so that is why some of the parts fit so well, and others not so much. So when you 70 Charger guys bolt up your new front valence pans from AMD and they fit perfect right out of the box,you can rest assured that I had your backs,by offering up my NOS valence pan for templating, and test fitting it on several 70 Chargers. I am glad that we have reached the point where almost any Charger can be saved.

I have seen some guys that perfomed amazing restorations in a single car garage with just a floor jack and jack stands. I have a 34x60 shop with an asemetrical two post lift,a scissor lift,a rotisserie,a glass bead cabinet,a tire machine, and a wheel balancer,as well as torches, and mig welders too. I also have more Mopar project cars than one man can do in a lifetime. Just so you know how fortunate you are to have the Charger that you have,I have been building Chargers for forty years, and I have seen about ten Chargers that have had all original body panels in our area. I have only had the oppertunity to purchase one 70 Charger R/T SE survivor car from the family of the original owner, and even in the nineties the car was priced just out of my reach, and at the time I did not have a safe enough place to store the 32,000 mile B5 blue time capsule that the original owner so carefully cared for. Those of you who are familiar with the survivor tent at the Mopar Atlantic Nationals,at Raceway Park in English Town New Jersey may remember the car. I had first dibs on the car,but the timing wasn't right,so I passed. I thought my step sons best friend was busting my ass, when he said,my grandfather has a car just like yours, when he looked at my freshly restored 70 Charger R/T SE,then he said, but my grandfathers car is nicer than yours. He was right it was. Finds like that even twenty five years later are not the norm, and are not just available to everyone as you guys make it out to be.

* A "Rotisserie" to place the Car on to facilitate the work once underway -Yes  :2thumbs:

* Adequate Tools, Compressor, know-how knowledge and skill sets -Yes  :2thumbs:

* A stable Job with shitty wages that allows adequate off-time for a thousands of hours undertaking ? -Yes   :eek2:

* The ambition to go out to the shop after working all day long in that miserable shit hole, clear my head of all of the day's bullshit and actually accomplish something on the car? -Not so much.  :rotz:

All good points. My 2 cents, unless it came from the Factory with a Hemi, who cares about numbers matching.
Save your money, suck it up and spend more now so you can have fun. Tomorrow may never come.
