Howdy gang,

hotrod98 told me to come on over here and introduce myself...

I'm the lucky SOB that won the "Win the King's Car" contest put on by Sue Bee Honey.

My daughter is working on a web page to showcase it and there's enough info posted now to see what I got.  I'd appreciate it if you could check out my new baby and let me know what you think.

Hi Phil!

Thanks for dropping in over here too, and welcome to DC.com's Aero Forum!

You're a lucky guy to have won that car, for sure.  Cool story, too...

Very lucky indeed! Everyone here wishes they could be in your shoes. Just out of curiosity (and I've always wanted to ask a contest winner this question) how much did they get you for in taxes?

Congrats.  You are one lucky person :yesnod:

Welcome to the site.

Thanks guys.  It really is an eyecatcher.

The taxes will be due next year.  What happens is that its reported as income just like someone paid me $50,000.  Right now my wife, the financial expert, has figured it to be 12-14k.

When they called about announcing me the winner they made me take a couple of days to talk to a financial consultant and find out what "hidden" charges Texas had for prize funds.  Luckily Texas doesn't have a state income tax.

My neighbor is a CPA and he's working on making it into a promotional business and maybe I can write it off.

I too have a Petty Blue Superbird, and will be picking up my Petty Blue Superbird this Saturday. It has been having a professional nuts and bolts restoration on a rust-free car for the last four years -- and is finally finished. It was Dave Kanofsky's car. It was originally delivered Vitimin C Orange -- but repainted Petty Blue early on. The below is a 1974 photo of it. SInce all but a year or too has had this car blue -- I kept it that way for historical purposes. (plus I like it better)

These are a couple of photos of it a couple of weeks ago, prior to its final detail and correct battery. It was entered in a pretty big show last weekend -- and took Best of Show.

I'll be selling this car to finance a business and the restoration of my b5 Blue Superbird (also 6bl 4-speed -- but with white buckets and console).

If your friend is looking for the best -- this might be it. The guy (Ken Presley) who restored it has received a Best of Show for his Alpine White everytime shown -- including the 2004 Monster Mopar -- and he'll tell you this car is better.

It sucks to have to pay that much in taxes so I guess you'll have to pretend you're buying it for $14k, which is a helluva deal.

I checked out the 5 pages of photos on your site -- but didn't see any under the hood or interior. You have any photos of that?

Meeting the King was one of the biggest thrills of my life.  He made sure to spend some time with me even though there was hundreds of people pulling him different directions.  What an incredibly busy "retired" driver!  My wife stayed inside the media center after my presentation and 15 mins. later Richard came back in with an entirely different garb and she heard him ask somebody "What am I promoting now & why?"

Yeah, I have photos of the engine bay, interior and trunk somewhere (the insurance co. required them).  I guess I didn't give them to my daughter to post.  I'll find them and post them soon.

That's what I thought too, when I saw the 426 c.i. on the hood.  And they actually considered doing it but their lawyers talked them out of it for some obscure liability reasons (damn lawyers).  It's pretty disappointing to open the hood and not see a Hemi.

I'm installing a crate hemi in my challenger convertible. The motor was 12,200. but the boltons are running another 2 grand so you can pretty much plan on spending over 14k.  Would be an awesome ride though.

I thought about that but it will have to wait until all the money has been squared away next year.  What's the cheapest hemi I could buy?  It seems like everything I see is over 10 grand.

Like bull said "It sucks to have to pay that much in taxes so I guess you'll have to pretend you're buying it for $14k, which is a helluva deal."  It is an incredible deal but I wasn't expecting to pay that much extra this year so we'll have to watch the budget.  Believe me, I'm not complaining,  there's no way I could justify buying a car like this and still be married!  :-\

I'd get a "Friendly" Appraiser give you a low number because of it's "lack of streetability". That will cover you on taxes. Even if Sue Bee gives you a 1099 for $40,000 --- you should be able to off-set it with a lower appraisal. Hoever, the Feds always get it in the end. When you sell the car someday -- the difference between the price you paid taxes on and the price you sold the car for will be taxable either as income, short term gains, or long term gains. Get use to it -- my bung-hole hurts bad every year around April 15th.

That's good advise BK.  My next door neighbor is a vintage European collector. He said I should be able to get an appraisal for what the car was built for not what some Richard Petty fan would pay for it.  That should save me a bunch on taxes.

Does anyone know of such an appraiser?  I live 90 miles north of Houston, TX.

About $12,900 plus shipping is the cheapest hemi that I've seen. From there you will need a carb, $300, TTI headers, $700, motor mounts, $250, Pulleys and brackets, $500, air cleaner, $350, kickdown kit, $100, and various other items. So, you might want to wait until you've recovered from that $14,000 tax bill. The cool thing is, with a mopar, you increase the value of the car by twice the cost of the investment when installing a hemi. No other car has that kind of value added to it with an engine change...none.
My challenger convert increased in value by about $40,000 by adding the hemi when I restored it.

You must be fairly close to me -- as I have a lake house on Lake Conroe.

It doesn't have to be by any kind of certified (I don't even think they're any) appraiser -- just by someone in an automotive business that can pass the smell test of being an expert. Hell, if you have a friend that owns a used car lot -- he can write you up a statement offereing $15,000 for the car -- and you can refuse. BTW, I'm not a CPA. I just play one on the Internet.

congrats on the car and that is one sweet ride but i have all but one question, how come that chopped 70 coronet hood on your car doesnt have the superbird filler panel connected to the hood but rather to the car itself so it cannot be opened like original superbirds? im not dissin ur car or nething its just been buggin me since i saw that car in mcg awhile back-MATT

Bluestar

Not to knock the car, because I entered the contest as well, the terms of the contest when i entered said it was a Superbird and by the next day they said it was a 1970 Sattelite Superbird Clone originally a 318 car.  Again not knocking it in the least as a free or $14K Superbird clone car is pretty awesome.  The terms of the contest also said that it was a completely street legal car as well.  I also seem to remember the terms saying something like the car needed to be available to Sue Bee Honey for 1 year.  Maybe you can write the $14K off against rental or usage charges to Sue Bee Honey.

Good luck and awesome looking car.

the great thing about that is, if sue bee honey uses the car for whatever, it will just continue to go up in value and the new owner will get even more famous.  he's gonna be rich someday(if not already) :boogie: :boogie: :boogie:

I wasn't aware that the Petty Bird you have was Dave Konofsky's old car. The one he sold to get the Daytona he has now?

nitrometal

To answer your questions ....

1) I didn't build it so I don't know why the filler panel is different.

2) Sue Bee doesn't have any claim to it anymore. It's all mine, baby!

3) I don't have a clue who owned it before me.  It was titled with the promotion company in Atlanta.
I did find out that it was built up by this company...http://www.rhineenterprise.com/index.htm

Yeah, they told me if I didn't take the prize that some dude named Rick would!!!  ;)

It really is a striking color. You can pick it out from 10 blocks away.
I was told that they had to get the paint from Petty Enterprises.  They made it sound like you couldn't get it at your local paint store.  I guess that's not true?  Phil
