Starting car that hast been sitting.

Hey guys,

Debating whether I sell my car or not. It's been sitting for a while now and figured either way, whether I keep it or let it go it would be good to get it fired up.

I figure obviously drain gas, coolant and fresh oil wouldn't hurt.

Pull the plugs and maybe a bit of oil in the cylinders? I've read some say some marvel mystery oil or a spray of wd40 in there would help. Then turn it over a few times to get it moving before putting the plugs back in?


Am I missing anything?

Before you try to fire it, it is a good idea to prime the oil system and get some oil up to the heads. Also get some fuel pressure up with the coil disconnected and check for leaks before attempting to fire it up.

How long has the motor sat since it last ran ??

I would just put a battery in and pour some gas in the carb and start it

Yup same here.  Check the fluids. Might want to make sure she's not stuck. But I doubt it if she was in out of the elements. My Roadrunner sat for 5 years and fired right up.

Pour a little down gas the carb. About one half of a 35mm film container works good. If it's only been 2 or 3 years. Should be good. Now if you want to go on a road trip you might want to check things out a little closer once you get her going.

So gave it a go today...

Drained the old gas and removed the old battery.

Hooked up my battery charger / jumper to the cables and tried to start it. Didn't hear my electric fuel pump start. Found a blown fuse for that so solved that.

Getting fuel to the carb now tried to fire it up and it wouldn't go. Starter is clicking away so I'm not sure if the jumper has enough juice? Was kind of hoping the jumper could do it on its own but I may have to go grab a battery.

Ya gotta keep in mind to have enough volts/amps to not just crank it over but get 12V to the coil.

So I was thinking about how long the car sat and realized it's been much longer than 2-3 years. Sorry my brain is a sponge these days with kids and shift work.

It's likely closer to 7+-
So now I'm thinking I probably should prime the pump and picked up the tool from Mopar.

Do I just set the engine to top dead center, pull distributor, pull the cam gear, insert tool and spin it counter clockwise? Then reinsert gear and distributor to same position? Or am I missing something here?

Yep, DTC is a good idea, mark the distributor location before removing it and note the rotor orientation and proceed as you stated. I would want to get some oil up to the heads, I think one head oils when #6 is at TDC firing and the other at #8 TDC firing, (presuming big block) can't remember for sure though. Could just pull the covers and splash a bit of oil around - can't hurt.

Sometimes even with adequate voltage, the starter will not spin...You may need to tap it a few times with a hammer. I'm not kidding, a few taps, not hard enough to dent it.

I guess that means I have to hand crank it to put 6 & 8 at TDC then crank it back to the original position where the distributor was.

You can bump it round on the starter, it's good to see a show of oil to the heads while priming but it is unlikely you will have a problem with with the heads not getting oil. I would do an oil and filter change, make sure your fuel system is good to go then prime the oil system, refit the distributor then pull the valve covers and pour a little oil over the rockers, crank it over a few times with no ignition and the valve covers off, once your happy, refit the covers and start it up.

Any tips for getting the oil pump cam gear out? I can't seem to get it with pliers

Rotate it out of mesh with the cam with a large screwdriver then grab it with a pair of long nose pliers.
