I have some issues with my current tank leaking. I have tried all sorts of patching jobs. I have a tank off a 73 charger but it does not have what I think is 4 vent lines. Mine has the the 4 vents line. Would it be an issue to to get rid of the vent line? And is that what they are?

have you tried to patch with JB WELD that works great and is stronger then the tank itself only thing is you have to clean real good aroung where you patch or it wont work and it has to be a dry surface also

I have tried that. Last spring I removed the tank and cleaned it all up and used the JB weld to patch my spot. The leak I can't fix sits right in the middle and when I fill my tank it bows out in the area I repaired and cracks my repair job.

I would much rather replace it but I don't know what the four line that I would be getting rid of are for. I assume they are for ventalation, but do I really need them.

I checked the other tank I have and it is in perfect condition.

So do I need the ventialtion lines or not??

well that tank must vent some other way so i am not really for sure my tank has the 4 vents.

I would say yes, you need the vent lines. When the tank heats up, the air needs to escape somehow. Also, I don't know how stock your vehicle is, but there is usually a canister under the hood that is connected to those vent tubes.

What year Charger? My 71 has the 4 lines that come out of the driver's side that are suppose to go to a unit tucked in the driver side rear wheel well. My 72 has 4 lines that come out the front that go to a fuel/vapor recovery unit that is attached to the frame right in front of the tank. Neither one of my Charger's has the complete fuel line system hooked up.

To be honest, my '71 is like yours. I do not have anything under the hood hooked up to it. I am looking at an old Chiltons with a generic pic in the Dodge section. It shows the tubes going to a canister in front of the tank, and then there is 1 line from this canister to another canister, called the charcoal canister, under the hood. The charcoal canister has other lines running to the carb and the intake manifold. It was designed to prevent fuel vapors from escaping into the atmoshere.

Even if our cars don't have the under hood parts, the line that is supposed to go to the charcoal canister still works as a vent. It just vents to the outdoors instead of the carb and motor. Weather it is truly needed, I guess I can't say for sure.

Its only needs it if you have the smog police in your state checking your year of car, most states don't go back that far, but some do go to 67 so not sure. It will run just fine but somebody might complain depending on where you live.

Mine is a 71 and the four lines run to a small tank in the driverside rear wheel. The tank I am looking at is off a 73 charger. Hopefully I can use that one.

JB makes a specific "weld" for fuel tanks and other wet applications. JB Stick or Waterweld.

For your safety and family, and respect to your Charger, get a new tank. Patches will not do it. :rotz:

I'm at work now, but I have a number at home for a guy that has gas tanks at a pretty good price. NYCMille and I bought new gas tanks from him and with no doubt, he was the lowest guy around. Not sure if he carries all the models, but it's worth a call. If he does'nt carry your particular model, he might steer you in the right direction. I'll post the number tomorrow. Later.
