Did you guys notice the steering column? The underhood shots make it appear that it is an automatic, floor shift column. I see a lever on the column near the firewall that on MY 70, is attached to the shifter linkage.

All 1970 model year steering columns have an arm for the lock out linkage regardless of transmission type.

:popcrn:  Mine was a manual, and I think I also have that lever, but I'm interested to hear what others say.

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

Good to know, Mine had the same column & linkage & was floor mounted automatic, some people accused me or somebody of changing it from column shift to floor shift or changing column but my car was all original unrestored low mileage car & I knew the car since 1980 & knew it was all original. Thanks for the info. LEON.

Thank you. I was hoping that an astute member would know for certain. I have not seen many 1970 Chargers with manual transmissions to have observed their quirks.

Alaskan_TA

The 1970 model year has a lot of one year only features.

That is one reason I try to research it exclusively.

The linkage locks the shifter in the reverse position, and the key will not release from the ignition until the linkage moves the bottom collet on the steering column to rotate enough for the ignition switch to turn to the lock position and then the key may be removed. It is an anti theft device, that works the same way as an automatic car did on 1970 models. The automatic car must be in park to shut the ignition switch off completely and remove the key.

Kern Dog

Okay. I guess if I convert mine to the 5 speed Tremec I'll just have to position the lever in the LOCK position.
Good to know.

chargervert

I have been known to use a carb return spring to keep the collet in the proper position.

XH29N0G

I think the lock is attached to the base of the column, so you can rotate that to start if it bumps down to a lockout position.

I have had to do that but it was to get the key out of the ignition  :2thumbs:

Looks like it Start's at $35k. He's getting closer. Didn't it start out at $49k?  LEON.

Who ever buys it better plane on rebuilding Door hinges. Drivers side sagging extremely low. Got so bad it tore up the metal around Door Latch Mechanism on Door. Typical of saggy Door. As seen in his Pics. LEON.

He rejected $30,001 for me as well.   Told me he needs $38K out of it to break even.   :brickwall:  :popcrn: :popcrn: :popcrn:

Is this the piece to which you refer, Mr. Kerndog?  I ask because I removed this when I converted my '70 Satellite from a column-shift auto to a 4-speed.  Did I do a bad thing?

Alaskan_TA

Manual or automatic, it is part of an OE 1970 column.
