wheel question and raisin rear question

i'm wanting to get more of an "old school" hotrod look out of my 72 charger and i have afew questions...1 what is the widest police rim available (those black steel slotted rims that came on alot of cudas), 2. What is the widest tire/rim combo i can fit under the back (15 inch rims, big meaty tires) 3. What is the best way to raise the rear end up an inch or two (my buddy has some 1 1/2 inch lift blocks he said i could have if i wanted them, but i've also heard of longer shackles and air shocks)...any help is appreciated

Air shocks, shackles, coil over helper shocks all SUCK.. They will do more harm than good.  Lift blocks only work if your axle is UNDER your springs. Yours should not be. If it was you would be 3 inches higher now..

First figure out what you want from your car and will the car handle what you want it to do.. Raising the rear puts more weight on the front. That's NOT a good thing. Also doing this will change the cars driving characteristics. Traction will go to hell as well as cornering. That's why 99.9% of muscle cars do not sit high in the sky out back.

I wish they did not make longer rear hangers, they just ark the rear part of the spring making it flat,
and makes the car handle poorly. If you use a 6in hanger it will only raise the car one to two inch's.
I like big tires that fit in the wheel wells my

then what other options are there? you guys have eliminated, shocks, blocks, and shackles, and there is no way i can afford to get my leaf springs re-arched or anything like that

I use lowering blocks on my red 68 and have never had a problem. If you use blocks to raise the car, make
sure its not more than 2in, if so you will run into pinion angle problems.

except it's like steve said earlier and i failed to realize when the idea rolled through my head, i would have to have the springs on top of the axel for blocks to work....hmmm i'll keep pondering on it for awhile, i might still end up with the shackles until i can afford some taller springs, which i plan to do in a year anyway

I would bet that those shackles have an overall length of 8-10".  My car came with the longer shackles on it.  It will do for now.  Until I figure out what exactly I want to with the car.  I kinda like the stance for now.  But to each his own.

You haven't shown us a picture of your car yet. You might just have weak springs and the shackles will make them much worse. If you must use shackles then get these.http://www.magnumhp.com/drivesusp.php
scroll down until you see the adjustable shackles. I use them with my new X/HD  R/T springs from Manciniracing.com The combo works well. I had them at the center(stock) height until I put on my Drag Radials. The 28" tall tires liked the highest setting. Remember that I am also using new springs. The shackles will make bad springs bend backward. A disaster waiting to happen.

it's not that my springs are worn out, they still have plenty of arch to them and it still rides fine. Like i said before i'm just looking for more of a "hot rod" of the 70's look

Ok, then. Go for the MagnumHP adjustable shackles as I did. Like I said, I did it to set a certain ride height for my rear tires. I am happy with my purchase.
