Carb very hot to the touch after sitting for over an hour

I am still batteling hard to start issues when its hot out. Drove around, ran where it normally does at 183 degrees came home, shut off, checked temp of carb after about 75 min of setting with hood open and its really hot to the touch still. I was going to add carb spacer but I do not have the hood clearance for that extra 1/4 inch.
I do not have a return line as an FTi and the block offs are covered.

Exactly what I got and I do not have that (1/4 in ?) of clearance. Maybe I need a different drop base?

c00nhunterjoe

I had a performer rpm intake, 2 spacers kit from cool carb, and a standard base air cleaner and it cleared the stock hood. What are you running?

comet_666

RPM intake as well, I am using solid motor mounts..not sure if that makes a difference. No spacers and a drop base. I do have a glass hood but it looks like bracing is in the stock locations.

c00nhunterjoe

I have solid mounts as well, motor sits about 1/4" taller then with rubber mounts in my case. How tall of an element are you using?

I had the same problem x2. Did the cool carb on both my cars fixed the problem on both (383/400 Torqer intakes)

c00nhunterjoe

How tall is your filter element? I run a short element with the filter lid.

comet_666

2 inch K&N without filter lid
Already has drop base but I may get a deeper base and use a 1 inch filter and get that lid....see if that works

ill measure my drop base tonight and either get something with more of a drop or much less and swap to 1 inch filter. I have another base with little drop but it does not fit over linkage of carb
I have to add that coolcarb plate

JR

I apologise if I missed it earlier, but is your heat crossover blocked off?

The cool carb plate has a polymer insulator sandwiched between the aluminum, and will melt if the crossover isn't blocked off.

everything will also run cooler with the vac advance hooked up to ported, adding 4 to 8 degrees  :Twocents:  looks like a firecore, it is adjustable

Yes the heat crossover is blocked off thankfully

I do not remember the reason why I do not have the vacuum line connected, I believe my engine builder said it was unnecessary for whatever reason.

Depends on your build. I dont typically use vacuum advance in my cars. But then again, most people tell me im crazy. I could quote jack sparrow, but nah.

Well, you know I drive mine & the heat here is VERY bad, without vac adv my car will creep up to 195 while driving with the A/C on, with vac adv, 180 ish all day long.  25initial, 35 total & 8 more on ported vac

I ran 42 total on my 383. So not that much different in the long run, except you have 120 or so cubes on mine.

I just hooked up the vacuum advance (manifold vacuum tho) for the first time in several years, and I was surprised at that side effect.  It has very noticeably slowed the rate of temperature creep when stuck in traffic

My temp stays around 180 unless I shut it off for 10 or 15 min , then it creeps up to like 195.

On a side note, I wrapped the headers and moved my fuel line away from the block and also wrapped that fuel line with heat shield.

I love your valve covers, where did you buy?
