There might be a new 2-door Charger after all

A buddy of mine was invited to a Chrysler concept car viewing in Dallas over the weekend and he said he saw a 2-door Charger concept there. No pics were allowed but he said it looked fantastic. Of course it may never see the light of day but he (as a Chevy guy) would buy one on the spot if they produce it.

He also said he saw a Demon convertible and a Cuda, although the Cuda was pretty much identical to the Challenger except for the tail lights and grill. We'll see what happens but it sounds like there could be some cool stuff in the future.

People may be surprised to hear this from me, based on my history of hatred for the new "Charger" but I do like the 2015-2018 model. Despite the four doors they do seem to be trying to make it look like it should have looked in 2005.

Homerr

I agree Bull.  But I also think it should have been called a Coronet.  Marketing idiots obviously liked the cooler 'Charger' name however, I'm just irked still at them calling any 4-door a Charger.  Maybe in a couple years they'll introduce the Charger minivan, Charger SUV, or Charger electric tandem tricycle - heresy!

John_Kunkel

If a new 2-door Charger did come to market it would have to be A LOT different than the current Challenger to not be redundant.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

1999 Dodge Charger concept.......Nice but it looked a lot like a GM product....(it's also a four door)

I've heard others say that the car should have been called a Coronet.
No. That name would not have resonated at all with the buying public. It is a stodgy title reminiscent of 50s era cars despite being used into the 70s.

JB400

Sorry, but Coronet just doesn't sound muscular.  It also doesn't fit in with the current marketing.  They couldn't use the Daytona namplate and Coronet SRT Hellcat doesn't have a ring to it.

Homerr

They did have the Magnum name going and replaced it with Charger.  Magnum sounded muscular enough to me.  Did the marketing weenies think it sounded too much like a gun?

Whoever at Chrysler hired those marketing "idiots" and "weenies" went laughing all the way to bank. Between the Charger and new "hemi" hype, they've sold a sh*tload of cars since the LX line came out 14 years ago.

The Charger and Challenger were a lot different back in the late 60s/early 70s so it stands to reason they would be today also. The current Charger is a lot different than the current Challenger too.

The current market today doesnt stand for another lx platform. There isnt enough sales.

Exactly. FCA appears to be phasing out "cars" from its line up altogether in favor of trucks and SUVs, and there are no real plans to replace the almost two decade old LX/LC and derivative platforms. At this point, who knows how long Chrysler and Dodge will even be around as brands.

Only scenario I see a 2 door charger happening is if it was brought out as a viper-type halo car a few years down the road.  In which case, you all would complain that its too expensive and every day people can't afford it, and blah blah...

All this is true.

I don't think anyone would mind seeing a smaller LX car platform.  The current Hellcats are literally as heavy as a '70s Fury/Monaco station wagon.

The problem is, any new small/medium car platform is liable to be wrong-wheel-drive.  D'oh!

Times have changed people...time to get over it.   Bottom-line is Dodge made the new Charger because four doors made it easier to extend the market and sell.   And, having four doors made it possible to offer a "sporty" sedan to families.   Have you tried loading your young kids into the back seat of a new Challenger....or for that matter try loading a kids car seat in the back...it is a real challenge for most.   Yes, I jumped on the band wagon when the new Charger came out, and oh my God it had two additional doors!   How could Dodge do that to our beloved Charger of yesterday!  Get a rope...get the torches.  No, just get over it.  They would never offer the Charger with two doors because it would directly compete with the Challenger and the market is only so big.  This is one of the reasons Plymouth, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, etc. are no longer around.

Times change, but that is why our "older" Chargers are so beloved...because they represent a time when two doors ruled, and performance sold.  Today, whether you like it or not it's MPG and safety that seem to be the two most important issues for most car buyers.    Of course there are those of us that still want performance, and it's out there, just offered in a different package, the exception being throwback cars such as the Challenger, Camaro, and Mustang.
Enjoy what we have today, because things will change within the next couple of years.....

And, one more note:  I am sick and tired of hearing individuals complaining about the Challenger being so heavy........It was heavy back in 1970 due to the platform used....and it's heavy today because of the platform they used.  If you did your homework...before buying, you would have known that.  But the '70 Challenger was a hot performer as is the new Challenger/SRT/Hellcat/Demon.....so get over it...please!

It's a vicious cycle I guess. I remember when the 4 door charger first came out: "too many doors...mopar needs a RWD two door muscle car...id buy one in a second."

Challenger comes out: "too heavy. too expensive. doesn't look enough like a 70. I don't like the shade of Orange"

I had two 4 door chargers from about 2006-2012. I've had 2 challengers since then. Now that I'm "adulting", Im ready to go back to 4 doors. Just trying to hang my suit coat on the hook behind the passenger seat in the Challenger is a production.

And, I test drove a scat pack charger the other day. Damn... :o

I definitely complained about the new Charger, especially since Chrysler's CEO at the time barely finished telling us there was no longer a market for a 2-door retro muscle car before putting the Challenger into production.

As for the Challenger, I've never complained once. I have wondered why they won't do a convertible version but that's nothing I'd consider upsetting or disappointing. This may be the only time I've ever said anything about it in fact.
