Do they make different throttle cable lenghts for a 383 vs. 440?

Hey all, one issue that I've narrowed down with my car (actually my mechanic noticed it too) is that the throttle cable is too short. I have the new Eddy carb on the car and if the cable is put into the correct position the carb linkage can not sit down in the idle position so you cant set the idle? I thought this was a stock cable "one size fits all" but clearly this cable is about 1/4 too short? In order to get the carb to idle you need to have the cable out of the linkage and not sitting correctly to give it the slack that it needs.

Anyone ever have this issue?

I believe the 383 and 440 use the same throttle cable.  I think the brackets are different, but I'm pretty sure the cables are the same.

Yeah my cable was the Wong size too, I just took the gas pedal off and put it a vise and bent it the way it needed to go. A better way I found out later on after my cable broke one day is to just go down to your hardware store and buy some plane old cable-they called it aircafe cable-the type with no sleeve and remove your old cable from the housing or sleeve and push the brand new one in. I got a lokar throttle cable the fist time but still just push the cable up the old hosing or sleeve. They give very nice stuff that hooks up to the carb and a stop for the gas pedal. But the cable was junk because it broke in like 2 or 3 years. So since I still had the lokar stuff I just used the plain cable from the hardware store. Been 5 years now no problems. This might not be the right way to do it but it was alot easier than taking the old one out. I hope you can understand what I just said. You can always just buy a 24" or 36" or 48" cable from lokar and have your mechanic install it for you. They are from $28.00-$46.00 at summit racing. Not sure how much your mechanic would charge you to install it.

theres multiple lenght throttle cables. I had 2 different ones on my charger (one too long, then ordered one too short) before i finally bought correct one, I think it was 21 for my 440 Charger

This is all good to know. No wonder my car is running like a 2v--because it is with this cable!!!!

I plan on reposting the issues that were resolved with my car as soon as I get a few moments. I got it back from my mopar guy last night. Cost me 159 in labor and it runs like a top now!!!

The brackets are different between 383 and 440.  The 440 block is taller and the 440 intake manifold is wider.  There are quite a few throttle cables available with the correct ends, it pays to get the correct parts.  I have a partial list of throttle cables on my website at www.arengineering.com.  Just go to the article section.

Andy, thanks for the tip. Based on your site and the listed part numbers I get that the 4088 095 is my part number? I assume it means Pickup Truck AND Big Block?

I just pulled my cable off. It measures exactly 21" end to end. My issue is that I dont have enough cable to 1) sit all the way back in the throttle bracket so that 2) I can have the idle tab bottom out as it should so I can adjust the idle. I think a 24" makes more sense but am wondering if a longer cable will allow the same movement on each end but just be longer overall? If that is the case then getting a longer cable will not resolve my issue?

Make sense to anyone? I do see the 24" available in many places so I'm inclined to get that part. Anyone have this similar situation? As a sidenote, my car used to have a 2V on it. Dont know if that makes sense that it has the 21" based on that but sure enough it does.

The Lokar cable is fully adjustable and you can cut a little off if need be. This way you can use your old brackets . It has set screws on the carb and pedal ends. Looks better too. If you get it just barely tightened the screws till you know its right, leave the springs off the carb and have somebody help you. One person inside and the other out with the carb. Once its perfect, opens all the way and fully closes then tightened the set screws all the way. Once you do even if you loosen them nothing will move.
