Hey guys, so sorry for the stupid amount of questions, ive only just purchased a 68 charger and am working out all the lights and wiring and unfortunatly, there is just no other dodge chargers around to go and have a look at so im trying to make sure everything is correct, the brake light on the dash, i assume this glows red when the handbrake is ON? then turns off once the handbrake is off? Ready to drive.  Does the dome light Dim this or have any effect on it at all, or will it shine red regardless if the dome light is flicked up or down. ?

Thanks a lot and appreciate the patience.  Only new to owning a charger. Absolutely love them, besides the work  :brickwall: haha.

BLK 68 R/T

It's only tied to the parking brake. Dome light should have no effect on it. If it does there are ground issues somewhere.

When emergency brake is on AND there is a brake fluid pressure failure

And / or.

It comes on when the E-brake is on and / or if there is a low fluid level indicated in the main system.

jefferson

Sorry guys, what you call in the US is different to us in Australia, the emergency brake on the floor, we call a handbrake and the parking brake is what the P on the console is when we go to put the car in park. I assume emergency brake is the same as the handbrake, the push pedal on the floor next to the other pedals?

Im confused, is that red brake light on the dash supposed to come on when the car is in park and no handbrake on, or ONLY when the handbrake is pulled up? Its ONLY linked to the handbrake right?

70 sublime

The red light on the dash only comes on if the parking brake is set OR if the fluid is low in the master cylinder and you step on the regular brake pedal

That red light has nothing to do with what gear the transmission is in ( or park)

Thanks sublime
Last question. The side markers. Do they flash in sync with the indicators or just light up when lights are on? I awear they were supposed to flash in sync with the indicators on the hood.

jefferson

Or is it only the rear side markers that flash in sync with the indicator and not the front?

jefferson

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_Mcx348Gh8

i know that is a 70 charger, but in that video besides for the rear lights, is that also correct for a 68, because if so, my 68 has been wired like that and is working like that in the video, only lights that flash from the front half when i hit the indicator are the hood(bonnet lights) and the lights under the bumper bar.

is that correct? I swear i thought the little side markers at the front side are supposed to flash in sync with the indicator but they just stay lit when the lights come on when you first turn on lights etc. and only the hood light and lights under the bar flash.

Correct?

Sorry to be a drainer anyone, being in Australia we have very VERY few people who know these cars.

Lennard

Yes, everything in that video lights up as it is supposed to. Side markers stay on continuously and blinkers are in the taillights,  hood and under the front bumper.

His brake light in the gauge cluster is probably on because he didn't put any fluid in the brake system yet, after the restoration. He doesn't have an engine in it yet either.

jefferson

Thanks mate,

this is really really stressful stuff, if it wasnt for this forum i probably would have given up on it by now because i have been so damn angry, not only that, but i have to postpone the car until i get my disc brake conversion kit which is out of stock from my local supplier for 2 weeks, the original 50 yr old drum brakes today were nothing once i took off the tyres and had a good look. Ah well, few more weeks wont hurt.

I really appreciate everyone on this forum, if there was a way to pay back i would.

so, just to confirm, the side marker lights are not indicators and should NOT flash when i hit the indicator?  Wondering why i even thought they were supposed to flash? They seemed like side indicators to me. lol.

jefferson

Once again, i have to thank you lennard and sublime
If you remember a few months ago i posted photos up of my charger before i got her and you were both very very helpful in identifying the 68 and 70 mixture differences my car had.

She is an absolutely beautiful car besides these few issues im having, once they are fixed ill have photos/videos up with personal thank you to this forum and too you two fellas because words cant describe how much help you have been.
i have an issue where somtimes i need to ask questions 2-3x in a different way or so too fully comprehend it. Im not  the smartest bloke around. lol

Im from Victoria Yes,

Hey sublime or lennard, those lights underneath the guard, they also known as fog lights or parker lights correct? Do they stay on continuesly until you turn the lights off? i know one flick up on the light switch turns them on, then another flick opens up the vents and the headlights come on, then low beam/ high beam clicker down by your feet. But in some youtube videos, i see the 2 lights under the bumper turn off when the headlights come on, others i see them stay on, bit confusing.

Or do they switch off when you hit the high beam/low beam clicker down by your feet, yet to play around with it a bit more, Just wondering if they should be on from the moment the car starts, or if they should turn off when you play around with high beam/low beam or the headlight switch all the way up to flick open the headlights.

Cheers

Awesome, we're moving there in a few months.  :2thumbs:

Look forward to seeing you around.

jefferson

For example

this bloke in this youtube video is driving his 68 charger around without the headlights on but only the parker/fog lights
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1pjgK1QJxo  That is one click up on the headlight button correct?

But then in this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2T7aAYm1Qwg

hes cycling through the headlight motions and the fog/parker lights arent even on like the above video

but then see when this bloke starts his 69 up, the fog/parker lights under the guard come on aswell as the headlights.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vE4QG4kyxMk

So damn confused at what is supposed to be on/ blinking blah blah

Super sorry for being a burden on the forum. But this is the last step for all the wiring issues for me.

Not low fluid, low pressure! A pressure failture able to unbalance the piston into the brake fluid dist block. Low fluid level will require sensors on master cylinder ;)

Depending on the dist block piston position. Althought it uses to be centered by default so if the system never got a pressure failure or unbalance, it should keep
the light off even without brake fluid on systen

You call it a hand brake even if it's on the floor?

No Fog lights. Just parking/turning lights. They are dual filament bulbs, one filament is 5 watts ( as far I recall ) to the parking/position feature and the other one is 21 watts ( as far I recall ) for turning light. In that case when parking/position light is on, the turning light feature will still be visible over the low intensity parking/position feature.

Up to 68 the parking or position lights are on when you turn on lights while the headlights are off. When you turn on headlights the parking lights are turned off. Turning lights function are appart from this.BUT SINCE 69 a jumper was added on switch plug to keep the parking lights function on even with headlights on. Some ppl with 68 could made this mod too since is easy. But originally is how they are.

Low or high beams... doesn’t matter and won’t affect the parking lights.

...and tied to the brake pressure switch, yes. Forgot about that, thanks Nacho

jefferson

Oh. Ok. So if i click the headlight switch up once .the parkers underneath the guard come on. Then when i flick it up again. All the way the headlights pop up and come on this should turn the parkers off? I think there staying on the whole time atm. The moment i flick the switch 。

Nacho-RT74

Correct. That is up to 68 in all Mopars ( can’t tell other brands )

1st step of light switch turn on all parking lights and sidemarkers. Also cluster illumination aside shifter light, radio faceplate, AC-HEATER knobs light, ashtray light. Everything of this interior lights are controled by the dimmer wheel on dash, but still turned on by the lights switch.

2nd step of light switch lift up the headlights doors, turn on the headlights ( low or highs depending of your floor swicth selector ) and turns off JUST the front parking lighs. Rest remains on

As mentioned, since 69 this was changed adding a jumper wire to the lights switch harness/plug to keep the front parking lights on on 2nd step being sourced from the rear/sides circuit to the front circuit no matter if switch cut the front circuit. This allowed to keep same switch on both years.
