Potential 69 Charger Purchase.

Hello. I'm looking at a possible 69 Charger purchase from a friend of mine and thought it would be a good idea to register to the site for some restoration tips as I go along. We are just in the getting together on price stage. I'll have some pics soon. It is still totally original. #'s matching. Here are the details.

1969 Dodge Charger
383 2 barrel
727 AT on the column
Triple green- F3 green ext, F8 green int, Green vinyl top
3.23 SG rear
Bench with buddy seat

Car has been garaged for many years. It was started about 5 or 6 years ago and ran good so I wouldn't think the motor would be stuck. Body wise, car needs rear lower quarters and probably lower front fender areas, trunk floor and some rear frame and cross section work at the very most rear. That area appears a bit soft and crusty. Rest of the car is solid, and since it still wears it's original paint, pretty easy to determine that. Car is complete as well. Not missing anything I can think of. Also has a good grill.

I'm OK with the all green car and I guess these days when you run across a car like this, who cares. I've restored many cars over the years but never a Charger so this would be something new for me. I've offered $10.500. I'll know Monday if it's a done deal. Based just on description anyone have a thought on what it's worth? I'll attach pics. asap.

Thanks.

These days a car like that is worth a heck of a lot more than what you're offering. Take it and have fun with it!

I know all the green would turn some people off but to me it's the fun and adventure of the restoration. I think the 383 2 barrel is a 290 horse instead of the 335 horse motor as in a 4 barrel car but still a big block in a B Body which is a good combo.

TimS1959 Hope you get her for a good price. l paid a lot more and found  rust all over the place.  My goal was 5,000.00 and have it on the road   Way over that and will have to replace a front rail and both fenders  :icon_smile_dissapprove: :flame:. But its mine now body did look good but l guess a lot of lipstick on a pig :brickwall:. My fault but l will get her back to par just need to sell a kidney and a lung :2thumbs:

TimS1959

My 1st goal also would be to get her road worthy then work on her a little bit at a time. I've got to take a look and see what the motor and trans are like after sitting for most of the last 10 years or so. Also the normal brake issues. The seller has a gas tank for it already so I'll need to replace that when I get her home.

If it is anything like mine replace the fuel line to the engine and also the filler neck  Mine was rusty and plugged up with rust :icon_smile_blackeye:

My Fuel pump went bad from sitting so long & had to replace that. LEON.

TimS1959

Hopefully the initial issues do involve replacing lines and such and not motor or tranny disassembly right away just to get the Charger road worthy. I've had it both ways on other projects. You never know. :scratchchin: :shruggy:

Yes David that's definitely my philosophy. Keeps me focused on the goal of restoring to be a nice driver. I'm not into the show car stuff, just as original as possible.

Here are some pictures of that Charger. Owner cleaned layers of dust off to reveal, what I think, is gold paint. I always thought it was a light green. I think this might be Y4 but the fender tag is too rusty for me to tell. I included a picture of that. Maybe someone else can tell. I'm going to try and remove and look from the back. He also has the broadcast sheet so I can take a look at that too. I've been at Monster Mopar this weekend but plan to go look at the car on a lift this evening and talk turkey with the present owner.

He does have the broadcast sheet. When I go over today was going to go over that real well. I hope it's half way readable. I restored an original 68 Super Bee a few years ago and the fender tag on that was the same way. Actually a bit worse, rusted in 2 pieces.

Was hoping I could get the paint code off that tag but it's so shot I can't make it out. Now I guess I'm down to it appears to be Y4 Gold or T3 Bronze until I get to see the broadcast sheet. I see Mother Mopar putting a dark green vinyl top & F8 interior on a gold car but don't recall ever seeing that combo on a light bronze car.

When I looked at the car last year before the present owner came to me a coupe of weeks ago and said he was going to sell, $10,500 was my offer for it. I'll probably stick with that and see where it goes. He was supposed to let me know last Monday on price. I'm begining to suspect my offer may be too low for him.

Finally got to inspect the car.

The good.

Car is #'s matching.
Fairly Complete. Appears to be missing the original radio and correct front buckets. It has the buddy seat.
Still wears its original Y4 paint on 90% of the car.
Very nice rust free doors and fenders.
80% of the broadcast sheet found.
Good glass.

The bad.

Swiss cheese rear frame rails and cross member.
Motor turns over but the running condition of that and the tranny unknown.
Lower rear quarters and at the front of the rear wheels need replaced.
Full floor pan needed for the LH side.
Not a running driving car.
Tail panel needs quite a bit of rust repair along with the roof around the rear window.

Price $15,000  :o

Seems high to me.

Agree or disagree??   :Twocents:

well l paid a little more than that and l'm into the floor pans and one front frame rail :icon_smile_dissapprove:. That's after l replaced both rear frame rails shock cross member rear frame cross member torsion bar cross member.  l did have the engine running but since l've done all this guess l'll rebuild both engine and tranny.   Also have to replace lower rear quarters front and back of wheels. So you possibly have the same thing l have :eek2:  And to think l was only hoping to have to put 5,000.00 in it and have it on the road for a little while :brickwall:

I would agree with that. I just don't see paying $15K-$20K for a rusty project that doesn't run or drive either.

That 70 was priced well below current market value. $15K for an unmolested 69 is pretty decent these days, and they're all in need of tons of work. If you don't grab it I'm sure someone else will really fast. Not saying you should buy it, but your $10K offer wouldn't get you much Charger these days.

I Say if you can do the resto or paint body work yourself then go for it. LEON.

69 OUR/TEA

Before I'd spend $15-20k on a rusty project , for only a little more I'd find a way to scrape up the rest for something like this . You are going to spend way more $$$ then you think doing a resto , way more time and aggravation to .

If your interested in a 69 S.E., B.B. A.C. numbers matching, contact me here, can send Pict's.

TimS1959

I put a pencil to this looking up all the parts that I can see it needs. I can do everything myself except the paint which I've put $10K on that. Plus money for a complete motor and tyranny overhaul. I would get two partial cars for good metal that would get me the rear frame rails and LH full floor pan. Even at this I'm looking at $25,300 to restore it. That's not counting anything I missed during the inspection and I haven't scrounged up any front seats for it yet. The correct ones are gone.

So I'd have roughly $40K+ in a standard Charger with E61 383 and AT on the column. My guess is the 40+ is actually closer to 45 or even 50 when it's all said and done. Not doing the paint myself is a killer on this one.

I'd be glad to pass his info onto to anyone here if there is interest. I'm going to pass on this one and continue to look.

Thanks all for the input.
