Or you could have it like today where the same three drivers in McRacecars go at it each week.

Just another one of those old "boring finishes" below.

Look at Hamilton hanging it out on the threshold of losing it.
David just passed it, and is clinging on to regain control.

Todays cookie cutter cars can not be driven like that for 2 reasons:

Radial tires.
Drivers have no balls.

I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

They do have balls.....being squeezed tightly by the sponsors  :yesnod:

I've probably posted this about 100 times before, but I stick to my guns  :icon_smile_big: : sure, there were exciting finishes here and there, but for the most part everyone from 3rd on back was 6+ laps down.  And odds are, one already KNEW that it was going to be the either the Petty or Pearson money teams winning the race (look at the stats on how many times they finished 1-2).  Kinda confusing why a few years ago there were so many complaints about how Jimmy Johnson winning so much was bad/boring for the sport, but Petty doing the same thing (winning bc of more money/equipment) was "good old racing".

Folks like Petty better.

But it wasn't always Petty doing the winning.

Obviously, if the racing sucked,  the people wouldn't have been lined up to see it.   There were different expectations and perceptions of what made for good competition.   Also less micro managing by the sanctioning body to create  the pack racing we have today.

The cars actually looked like the cars on the street, and the drivers got to be drivers and show their true colors.  Try that today.  Harvick and Kyle Busch wouldn't be doing just love taps out there.

It's always tough to compare eras.   But I do think the guys at the top level today have immense talent.    A bunch of them are in incredible physical condition.  If all they had to race were the dump trucks of the past,  they would adapt.

Seabeckredneck

I grew up watching these races with my dad. I love them! I quit following NASCAR when all the cars started looking the same, like a bar of soap!
Thanks for posting these videos!  BTW, I still watch the races once in awhile.... maybe more now that Danica is gone! JMHO

I agree. There are many drivers today that have the talent. We just need more "characters".....I don't think there are enough of them. I miss the era where all the cars were different and the experimentation/interpretation of the rules brought so many innovations with the "open" formula of days past. Smokey. Petty's, Junior Johnson.....they brought backyard brilliance. Deep thinking and seat of the pants stuff....not a bunch of engineers playing with computers. There are good tracks still providing good racing....I just don't get excited, counting down the days to the new season anymore. And if I miss a race - no longer a big deal to me.

My car sat on the pole at MIS in 1972 at 160 mph.     The last Cup race in-car telemetry showed 220 mph entry speed into turn 1.      I don't care if Petty says they can steer the car with two fingers, that is flying.

Just another boring dead heat finish.   Fireball Roberts #22 and Joe Weatherly #8 in '62 Pontiacs.
