What's the most economical route to go overdrive on a automatic 440 with a 727 in a 70 charger

flyinlow

Depends on how you feel about cutting your car and what shape your current 727 is in.

Junkyard A518 ,converter, driveshaft , adaptor. $2000 Cut trans tunnel (What I did)

Gear venders with your serviceable 727, drive shaft  I think about $3000  Not much over drive, but stronger then hell.

Silvers State Auto conversion kit. Looks easy, uses common chevy parts, 3:1 first gear . About $6000

Thanks, any computer required with the 518?  Console shifter still work just fine with it? And does the 518 bolt right up to the 440

Depends on the year of the trans. Google or someone here who knows for sure will tell you where the cutoff is.

I think so, but don't quote me on that.

Nope. You'll need to cut off the bell on yours & use an Ultrabell, or use an expensive adapter.

Pretty close but let me clarify a bit.

The Mopar 518 transmission is the cheapest but does require modifications to the torsion bar crossmember.  Over drive is what....69 ?
Gear Vendors is about $2800 plus shipping and yes, is likely to only blow up LONG after you've blown up a few 727 transmissions. The overdrive is .78.
Silver Sport Transmissions has a GM based 4 speed auto overdrive, the 4L60E. This transmission dates back to the early 80s GM 700R4. 3.06 1st gear, .70 4th/OD. They offer 3 stages of durability starting under $5000.
So far, that is it.

Art Carr makes a kit to put a beefed-up GM 2004R behind a Mopar.  On paper I think it might be the best auto overdrive option we have.  Gear ratios, weight, reciprocating mass, ground clearance, no cutting, etc.

They say the 2004R is weaker than the 700R4 (4L60E) in stock form, but it becomes the stronger one after they both get aftermarket overhauls.

No , no and no

Three wire pre '95 ( mine are all '94) later eight wire A518 need a PCM. Factory floor shifter probably will hit the larger tailshaft housing. I used an Ultrabell to bolt to a 440. Not a simple bolt in you will take a mini grinder, welder and hammers to your Charger. Drives like a 727 until you flip two switches an 1000 rpm disappear on the freeway.

There is a manual valve body that will work on all years of the a518/46rh,re, made by Cope Racing Transmissions, I converted my stock shifter to cable .

Be aware when using an O.D., as is said "everything affects everything else" ?
just say'in....
it may be beneficial to have a look at and plan a cruise rpm desired, and work it against Tire Diameter, Gearing, and Camshaft events to be used in the 440 ?
Because in my experience, Cam manu's never envisioned O.D.'s behind 440's which were never offered with an O.D., so many of the "off the shelf" performance grind 440 offerings, may not be that great for cruising/loading at the lower(sub 2,300 rpm) ranges ?

Really Officer, I have to go at least 2300 rpm to protect my engine. (82mph) Here's the cam card.   :smilielol:

My cam in the 512 is pretty big, but I can be in overdrive & lock up the converter @ 1800 rpm & it is smooth as glass.3.54 gear  1.6 Rockers

That's fantastic Charlie  :2thumbs:

How is it under a "load" down there ? Like if you come to a hill etc do you need to gear down or does it load up ?

It pulls great, no need to down shift. even with the 400-2 intake & Max wedge size ports, to be honest I am surprised the low end it has.

Mine has a milder cam. Engine spends 90 % of its time going 2000rpm. Seams happy . Below 1500 rpm in OD/lock up if you push the throttle down say more than 1/3 you feel it lug. Once the vacuum drops below 6 inches a switch unlocks the converter and its smooth again.

So CDR,

You can put a manual Vb in an eight wire A518?  You ratchet shift 1-2-3 then flip switches for OD/LU?   :scratchchin:
