steering wheel thoughts

I have the factory wood 3 spoke sport steering wheel in my charger and have had it repaired a few years back but it's cracked again right at the 12 o clock spot. Gonna cost me more than I bother to admit to get the cracks fixed again so i was wondering what ya'll thought about going to an aftermarket steering wheel. Classic Industries has a new line of steering wheels they are selling and the one I like is the MW99609P. It is a 14 inch wheel with a wood handle and it looks somewhat similar to the original but not as big in diameter. I do like the fact that it is a kit and comes with your choice of horn button emblem. I suppose if I don't like the non original look I could send mine off and have it fixed again and have an extra or just break down and buy the repro wood wheel. Most of ya'll could probably care less about which steering wheel is in your car but it's something that stood out for me when I got my charger and saw several of the 3 spoke wood wheels at mopar shows and I just knew I needed one on my car. Since then I have notice alot more of the aftermarket wood wheels on mopar's and at first I didn't like it but as time has went on I am liking them more and more.  So aftermarket or original??

Woodgrain all the way.
These cars have a beautiful dash and gauges, this is complemented by the woodgrain wheel, but an aftermarket wheel may look cheap in front of an original dash.

My roadrunner had a base model satellite wheel when I bought it..I spent a pretty good amount to source a survivor woodgrain wheel that was hanging on a wall since 1975 with no cracks.
I have not put it on yet, but I enjoy just going out in the garage and looking at it!

I like the wood grain wheel. Looks right in that car. But it could be a little bit smaller, and made from actual wood, so I'll probably end up cutting up a trashed wheel to customize. Should've bought one when they were still cheap though...
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

69wannabe.... if you decide to get rid of your original 3 spoke wood grain wheel, I'm interested.

If you're gonna go custom wheel, Nardi is where its at. (In my opinion.)

You can even get a leather wrapped one if you want.

The smaller Nardi wheel is on my short list of mods after a quicker ratio borgenson box.

Didn't Pat make his original wheel smaller and thicker for his Charger? That's what I would do. Mind you not sure I have the skill!

I like the original simulated woodgrain ones myself.

I've got aftermarket three spoke wood grain like the factory and it looks awesome. Factory horn button from the original steering wheel

It's looking like I will send it and get the cracks fixed and stay with the original 3 spoke wheel from the comments. I may purchase one of the repro wheels next year in case mine were to start cracking again

I had Mike Tarkington fix mine and it's gorgeous. $385 for mine, but it was in decent shape. You may want to get a quote from him:

Mike is the one that fixed mine but it's been about 5 or 6 years ago. It still looks great except for the two small cracks at 12 o clock. I am going to just send it back and let him fix it again and maybe it will last another 5 or 6 years again or until I purchase me a repro wheel....

That MW99609P looks cool... if wood is what you like do it!   :2thumbs:

I just have grant repro tuff wheels in my 2 cars.    The smaller 14" is good for me since I have PS.... since I'm not steering the Titanic.

This what you want....the famous 70s Austin Quartic steering wheel.....just don't let it spin back through you hands unless you actually WANT a broken wrist or fingers.

I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Had the 3 spoke wood grain in my first '69 Charger & liked it & would consider the repro version for my '68 if I didn't get lucky getting the plain black one in that I have now for a good price.

My '70 Road Runner has the wood grain one, but it's cracked. Got an estimate to have it repaired & have a hard time justifying that kind of money. I understand the labor behind it but I will probably just wrap the wheel until I decide whether I am fixing it or going with an after market wheel.

This seller on ebay has a nice wood wheel for a reasonable price.....

Anybody got pictures of their three spokes redone by Mike.  I'm looking for somebody to do mine.  I'm inclined to go with Mike but I would like to see some close-up pictures to see the final product.

This reminds me to mention that if you're going aftermarket... beware of Grand 4313 adapter kits...     for some goofy azz reason the adapter seems to be machined wrong and slides onto the shaft too deep.    You might not have a problem but I've seen 3 that did.    You'll know if the horn goes off all the time.
I believe that Grant sent production overseas (  ::)  ) and to do that they made PN 4313.    The old US PN is 3313.     Occassionally they show up on ebay.

While your at it consider more than just looks. I like my aftermarket wheel, it's smaller diameter but fatter grip sits flatter on the column. It moved the "holding feel while driving" into a much more comfortable zone.

That was always a thought since the original wheel is so big and it is a deep wheel too. That's what has me considering the smaller and not as deep a wheel but i'm still rolling it around and haven't made any real decisions yet

Are you talking about the wood grain wheel?

If not & it's the standard wheel, I bought a refinished wheel from a member on this site that came out beautiful. It was a black wheel originally but I needed blue for my Satellite. I haven't been in touch & I haven't seen any recent posts but here is his account info that has an email in it.....
