Had a reunion from the old neighborhood (growing up), this was the first 68 Charger I ever got to see often. Was parked in the neighbors carport and owned by one of the "older guys" in the neighborhood. VIN is "C" code I think. Column shift automatic. All original green interior.

Second pic shows the surprise...

Looks like he fed his car some Wheaties

Probably less bugs in the grill over the yrs.. due to the slant 6.

What is the surprise? The guy swapped out a slanty for a HEMI ?
Nice car but that has been done probably 1000 times between 318 and slant six models. Sure would be fun to drive but sadly, far from unique.

JB400

Not everyone can afford a Hemi, and the fact that the guy kept it in it's base model disguise, does make it unique.  Most jump at the opportunity and slap R/T makeup all over it.

It's a beautiful car and all, but I'm not sure I'd consider a hemi swap a surprise.

Seeing the original slant six in there would probably be a surprise, though.

Ive always wondered why straight sixes never became more popular in the U.S. They're wonderful. There are probably as many mustangs running around with boosted "Barra" Straight sixes in Australia as V8s, I wish we had that variety here.

Isn't that an old school hemi like a 392? The breather towers on each valve cover make me think it's an old 392

ALL first gen HEMI engines had distributors in the rear of the engine, right?

chargerbr549

As far as I know all first gen Hemi's had distributors in the rear, the small block mopar engine was very solidly based off of the first gen Chrysler Hemi.

I was thinking the same thing, seeing the original /6 would have been the surprise.   Regardless, beautiful car.

528 hemi crate motor....The son of one of the plymouth dealership owners also lived on our street. Back many years ago they got a chance to buy a bunch of these motors for cheap. Don bought one of these years ago. But I guess he never picked it up and it sat for several years in the corner. people asked about it and tried to buy. Finally a couple of years ago he got it and put it in. I think they said they paid less than $3K for the motor. Very cool!

That's a nice car. I think I would be sad driving that Charger around with a stock /6 engine.

Nice, but the radiator & shroud looks like they came straight out of a brand X wreck.

What are those chrome things on the valve cover?

Oh hell yeah! I'm not that wiggly for the Hemi stuff but for that kind of "buy-in", I'd have jumped at that opportunity.

Ya Youre right about dist. Being in the back on all early hemis. .ive just never seen valve cover breathers like that on a newer hemi

Good eye for catching that.
