1968 vin and numbers

  Someone at a show recently told me that  in 68  Mopar body numbers are production order or build related and do not match the dash VIN.  Is this correct or BS. I didn't argue with him as I  didn't know..

Body numbers match the SO number on the fender tag. So, no, not the VIN.

Yep, SO.

SO is short for Sales Order, the number on the paper form used to spec out the order originally.

The 68 SO number is NOT related to production order or build related. It is an administrative number used to track the car from ordering, invoicing and delivery.

For a 1968 the only way to link the body numbers to the VIN number is through the Build Sheet because the sales order number and the Vin number are both on that document.

The original order sheets are sequential. So if dealer A submits multiple sheets in one day, and they arrive at the factory at the same time, because SOs are sorted at as they are received then placed in sequential order for that days production then you would have three chronological cars with consecutive VINs all from the same dealer.

If 100 orders from different dealers arrive the same day, the SOs for that day would not be sequential but they would still be in order from low to high. SO 000100 would be assigned a VIN before 000200 and both would come before 001000.

There is a logic to the SO numbers. They were the primary tracking number from the dealer for billing and invoicing. VINs weren't assigned at the factory until after the combined SOs were sorted and the SPDs assigned.
