Hi all,
having trouble starting my 73 440 and I want to change out the ballast resistor.
Page 8-122 of the 1973 service manual says that the Coil side of the ballast resistor should be between .50 and .60 ohms while the Control unit side aux side) should be between 4.75 and 5.75 ohms.
Mine reads 1.4 on the coil side.  And an internet search of NAPA, Mopar, and Mancini racing all show 1.4 ohms on the coil side.
Did they quit making the lower resistance dual ballast resistor?  would a higher than specified resistance cause these ignitions to have problems?
Car dies after letting going of the key and I am slowly changing everything, wondering if the wrong resistance is part of the problem)
thanks
Vic

Hey Vic,
That symptom is almost ALWAYS the ballast resistor. Did you try another?
If that is not it, it could be the key/switch but I doubt it.

thanks, Bob
I try another one ASAP,but i"d like to buy one with the lower resistance value. of .50 and .60 ohms  in accordance with Page 8-122 of the 1973 service manual.
These days, this resistance only seems to be offered on single ballast resistors

With the key in the run position

Car does not have to bee running

Did you check for voltage at the positive side of coil ?
