Is anyone running the Hedman Elite Headers Part# 78038?  I was debating them or TTI.  I have the mini starter on my 68, just wanted to know about any clearance issues or denting that needed to be done on either side?  Any difficulties putting them in?  Can't get the starter out without loosening the header correct?  Thanks guys

Have a hammer ready, best option for less than TTI I found was dougs headers set.

I am running Doug's and they fit perfectly.   TTi's, Doug's, or don't bother...

I had the hedman basic model 1 3/4 long tubes on my 383 for years, paid 110 bucks new from summit. Fit like a glove, cleared everytbing including the stock starter and power steering box. I have heard that if used on a 440, they require a few dimples. I do not know if those listed are the same tube design on not since they are coated and ball/socket collectors.

My current application has tti headers that also fit like a glove, but its a completly different animal and the tubes are huge.

:iagree:

I have the cheap version of those Hedman headers, and while I've never had any major issues with them, I wish I went with TTI.

I had to smash the hell out of cylinder 1 primary tube to get them to clear a mini starter with iron heads on a 440. I have manual steering 1968 Charger. I've always had to remove the header to change the starter. Oddly enough, they seem to fit better with the Trick-Flow heads, except for spark plug clearance.

The only encouraging/interesting thing about those headers is the description seems to indicate they were designed for RB engines, so maybe they improved the fit?  What engine, cylinder head will these go with?

I don't understand how only two companies have managed to make headers fit an engine design that is 60+ years old in a car that has been around for 50+ years  :rotz:

I am running 2" primary TTI on my 440 in my 68.   Power Steering, mini starter.  Gets very close to the mini starter on one of the tubes but some grinding on a screw on the starter gave clearance. Im sure the smaller diameter tubed headers would be better  :Twocents:

Metallica, My plan was to order the 440 source heads and put the hedmans on.  Sounds like TTI might be a better way to go?

I dont know of any over the counter, 1 peice, long tube header that does not require removal for starter replacement. There are people on this site that have had to dent dimple and modify tti headers to fit while others have no issues. Its a crap shoot on a 50 year old car. You dont know what has twisted over the years.

just put hooker competition 3 inch headers in my car went in very well didnt have to dent anything
keep on keepin on

And I think that's why the TTi and Doug's headers are so expensive.   They've done the extensive research and development to help with fitment issues...

Aside from cost, which is indeed significant, it seems hard to go wrong with tti. Like I said, I've gotten by with my Hedmans, and they are still getten the job done. But I will be getting a set of tti sooner rather than later, and I won't feel bad about throwing away my $150 shipped old Hedmans

My understanding is that several, or at least Trick Flow and Edelbrock heads, space the exhaust out about 1/8" further than a stock head. Although the 440 source head looks similar to factory heads, it has also been claimed they are a Edelbrock ripoff. I doubt you would have a problem either way with the better headers out there. While I did have a set of 440 source heads, I never fitted an exhaust to em as I never even put them on engine.

It's easy to spend somebody else's money, but you are looking to spend the better part of $500 on a set of headers. If I was willing to spend that much, I'd just go all the way and get the Doug's or TTI. I got literally the cheapest headers I could get back when I didn't have the money to spend more, and right now I'm scraping up what will be over $1000 shipped for tti's, but I think it'll be worth it
