How do you allow yourself to get that way? He didn't just eat a few too many hoo hoo's. You have to work to get that big.

True dat.
Weighing 250 pounds is one thing, but . . . weighing half a TON?  That's something else.

At that point, I wonder if it's more like reverse-Anorexia or something.  Maybe a guy like that is subconciously trying to eat himself to death as a form of suicide or punishment or cry for help.

Depression will do it to a person. It happens because food can create a comfort zone. Trust me, I was there for a time in my life. I ate myself to 600 pounds. I snapped out of it when I sat down to eat one night, and ended up eating 5 - 12in. pizzas all by myself in one meal. I couldn't believe even I did that, and then started realizing it was wrong and on, and on. I dropped down to 370, then hit a Plato. I gained 40 back, now I am stuck here. No matter what I do, I can't loose it. And my back is getting so bad, I can't walk all to long before I have to sit down again. So, after some blood tests, my doctor found out I also have very low testosterone levels. Enough so,  that I really should have the 5 shots treatment to cure it. But The insurance I had would not cover it, and now, I don't even have insurance any more. And at last check, they were $500. a piece. My doc said that just having the shots, I could loose 50 to 75 pounds just because it would speed my metabolism back up to normal levels. Right now, according to my doc, my metabolism is dangerously low. He also said from being as heavy as I once was, and now that I lost what I did, I probably have about 50 pounds of just extra skin on me. It sucks, trust me. Nothing worse then having people hate you because of the way you look.

Man, that sounds tough.

I'm not a big guy at all (190 lbs), but I'm amazed at how hard it is for me to just kick off 5-10 pounds or improve my diet by a tiny little bit. (And I know I've got it SO  easy at this size.  Losing just a few pounds would be enough to give me immediate visual results.)

My cousin used to weigh about 400 lbs.  He's a big/tall guy, and he was a raging alcoholic & had a badly injured leg at the time.
Then he quit drinking and started trying to lose some weight.  He's down to about 300 pounds and is doing a lot better now, but he said it was so discouraging starting out that heavy.  He said must have lost 50 pounds before he even began to feel like he was accomplishing anything.  Maybe 300 pounds is never gonna look slim according to Hollywood, but it's a major life-changing accomplishment for him to have gotten down to this size.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What did that guy from the band "Poison" say in that VH1 special?  "As crazy as it sounds, I discovered it was more socially acceptable for me to be a drug addict than it was for me to be overweight!"

Our society is so driven by these things.  Looks are right up there with money & power these days.  I don't think any other time in history is comparable to what role it plays right now.

Our modern food is also a new thing for mankind to deal with, too.  Pizza, hamburgers, taco salads, etc.
It's basically "hot-rodded" food from a chemical point of view.  Our primitive caveman ancestors never had access to that kind of concentrated calories available all around them every day.  Nothing even close.  And in most of American stores & resturaunts, it's getting dowright difficult to find anything that's not in this category anymore.  Just trying to eat healthy is getting to be a lot more inconvenient & expensive than the bad stuff.

Do you think fat people want to be that way?  It is really not that way!  I have been overweight most of my adult life.  You would here the comments see people watch you eat, and it only feeds the depression.  I have lost 140 lbs in the last 13 months and I am almost to my goal weight.  I worry constantly that I will gain it back.  I will have to count calories for the rest of my life to insure that doesn't happen.  I am sure that guy would love to be normal.

Within just a few months of blowing out my back I put on about 70 pounds. I went from working 72 hard hours per week to doing nothing but sitting or laying down and eating. Depression sets in and takes over your life. You now have three things constantly on your mind. Pain, worry and food.. You can't do much about the first two so food becomes your buddy. I broke my back 8 years ago. I weighed about 220-225 lbs. The most I have been is 317lbs.   I have also been working at it for some time now but am also stuck. I've been at 275 for a few months now. I'm 6'3" so I guess I don't look like a house, but I know I would be in less pain if I could lose a bunch more..

Stress, anxiety, and insomnia can all contribute to wild swings in weight as well :icon_smile_sad:  I discovered this a couple of years ago when I was going through some serious illness.  I was unable to sleep, causing strange adrenaline releases, which in turn, created unbelievable amounts of anxiety and stress.  I lost my appetite, and the weight melted off my body.  I had been somewhat overweight at about 200 pounds, but in two weeks, I had lost almost 20 pounds :o  The doctors started checking me for cancer, which made the anxiety worse.  Finally, the initial illness cleared up, but my stomach and digestive system was a wreck.  I started taking meds for that, and was able to eat again.  In about a month, I had regained all my weight, plus an extra 10 pounds, yet I was still unable to sleep.  This time the doctor decided to check my thyroid for disfunction.  Nothing.  I still wasn't sleeping, but my weight jumped 30 pounds in a month with normal eating habits :o  Apparently, if you can't sleep, your body doesn't allow proper weight loss, so the symptoms can go one way or the other.  It's almost three years later now, and I am just starting to sleep through the night again.  Hopefully I will be able to start melting off some weight :-\

Steve P.

Well maybe that's my problem. I haven't had a good night of sleep/rest in 8 years. My memory is out to lunch as well..  :-\

Even if you can't afford the shots right now, you will later on.
I do not mean to be ignorant but since I won't even try to put myself in your shoes I can do nothing but give you advice that I have seen work on a few people.
Cutting down on fatty foods and doing more exercises is an obvious thing to do if you want to lose weight, everyone knows that but trust me, two dumbells at home won't do the trick, you need to startle your body, make it wake up and wonder wth is going on.
Join a gym, forget about the way you look but how you want to look, there's all sorts in those places, not a damn thing to be ashamed about.
Even if this doesn't work, you are out, you're busy, you're not on the couch feeling depressed, I may be a lightweight but I know that feeling all too well and frankly none of us deserve it, it plain sucks, after a while you forget why you were so depressed in the first place !
And who knows, you might find some new friends in the gym, i know I have, maybe someone else shares your problem, maybe knows how to help and again even if not, what did you lose? A man can only try and take it from there.
Maybe you can find yourself a personal trainer, someone who knows all about gaining and losing weight and money isn't always a necessity here, even in our society a simple trade still works. I fixed a guy's car while he fixed my bike's engine so we both saved a bundle, what do you have to trade?
Hell If you open a paypal account I'll send you 5 bucks, just like that and if all members would do that instead of blowing it on crap like we all do, you might just have a few shots right there.I'm up for that, I wouldn't if someone begged but you never did, this is my idea so go ahead.
And the reason why I quoted that line specifically is because we here can all look at you and see a friend, a buddy or just the guy who does right to all, in all this time I've been here I've never seen you out of line.Kudos to you, we can't hate you, no matter what you look like, trust me.

Oh and btw, you owe me a tv dinner, that pic is...shocking   :icon_smile_big:

Now that's funny.  :D

I too have been a "Big Guy" most of my life. I am currently on the way down from a high of over 400 lbs. For me , depression was my worst enemy. My job as a over the road driver didn't help matters either. Lots of junk food, little or no exercise, hours of stress. I'm lucky I didn't drop dead of a heart-attack or stroke.  Getting the right medical help is paramount in any form of treatment you seek. Your mind has to be in the right place in order for your diet/exercise/lifestyle plan to work. I have been out of work the past 4 1/2 months, recouperating from two surgeries that were long overdue. My body has paid a terrible price because of the situation I found myself in. To many responsibilities, not enough checkbook. Well , that whole lifestyle is over for me. Yea, I'm going back on the road at the end of this month, but I got a whole new attitude and a new playbook! Life is to short and to precious to let it slip by. I walk a mile or more every day now. At first, every joint in my body screamed in pain.....but like most things, the more you do it- the easier it gets.

I hope and pray for all my "large brothers" every day. Go get the help, no matter the cost. When all is said and done, its your health that matters most.

I used to be able to eat anything and not gain a pound.

These days, I run 15-20 miles a week just to maintain.

But, there are fat people out there who like it that way. They've convinced themselves that they are "healthy"

Check out these psychos:

http://www.bigfatblog.com

You've heard about them pulling soda out of the schools because we've got a generation of overweight kids, right? A good thing, right? Not according to these idiots. It sends the wrong message that "fat" is unhealthy.

They're out there.

I'm working on loosing some weight myself. Actually, when I was down in Texas I lost weight because I was on the go and the food I was eating there was a heck of a lot healthier. You just had to be selective.

dkn1997

I am 5'7" and 1 year ago, I weighed 250.  not good.  I now weigh 221 and I am still going!  I did it by running 3 miles every other day, nothing crazy.  some things people overlook:

-soda/snapple iced tea, fruit juice,  It's the enemy.  I drink nothing but water or diet soda now.
-night eating.  The worst.  I stop shoveling it in around 6-7pm now.

also, bring your lunch to work, no matter what.  you won't be tempted to grab 3 slices of pizza for lunch!!

-get the crap out of the house.  if it's not home, you wont' be able to find it to eat it.

-allow yourself a "cheat" day.  pick one day where you are not so careful about what you eat each week.  have eggs for breakfast, get mcdonalds (just no fries, they are the enemy too.)

don't eat just 3 meals a day.  I eat early in the morning, something small, then small "2nd breakfast", then lunch, then a small snacky meal at 3pm, then dinner, then maybe a bit of something after that.  don't starve yourself.  you would be surprised that you won't lose weight until you START eating.  3 a day does not cut it for me.  I save it all up and end up gorging myself.  multiple meals is the way to go

I still want to drop another 30, and I feel it will happen.  was "back on the wagon" of eating over the winter, but now I am running again and eating better.

Thats great advice DKN. Ive been trying to follow a similar routine myself. my biggest downfall is the McDs almost everyday and night eating due to my work schedule. Its amazing how you can shed a few pounds in the matter of a week or 2 just by drinking water only and cutting out the soda. Ive been cutting back on the brewskies at night and just having a glass of scotch or 2 beeing that theres no sugar in it. Im hoping to get down around 210# this summer.

Mike DC

That stuff sounds like good changes to make.  They always say it's better to make real lasting changes & lose a little weight over time than just crash-dieting or going on exercising "binges."

And yeah, it's amazing how much the soda & little crap does!
So much of junkfood is spiked with TONS of sugar, and it's not just in the obvious stuff like chocolate.  Stuff like french fries & pizza are usually heavily spiked with sugar too.  They seem to put sugar anywhere they possibly can.

Old Moparz

I've been fortunate that I never had to scrutinize my input of foods to keep my weight down. Had friends in high school on the wrestling team that wanted to kill me. One guy would eat celery & watch me eat 2 lunches & he was the one that gained the weight. That doesn't mean I can't gain, I once gained 22 pounds in one month in my early 20's when I had worked late for about 5 weeks. I ate dinner at 10:30 PM & went to bed, & couldn't believe it. Glad that stretch of time ended, & have stayed the same basic weight since.

Ability to lose & gain weight vary with people, & also what you consume makes a difference. I've always had a job that kept me active, but over the last 10 years I've been behind a desk. At 43 years old, I can still do a lot of what I used to do, but I do feel out of shape, or to better put it, I feel less energy. I know I need to do more physical activities & have been occasionally contemplating a new mountain bike to get back into it. (The old Schwinn 10 speed English racer just can't handle the dirt & gravel roads.)

I still wear the same size jeans as 20 years ago, but I know I can feel changes in me that if I don't do something about will catch up as I get even older.

Hey drailed,

Not to shock you, but drinking scotch isn't going to be any better than beer for weight loss. It may be sugar & carb free, but your body turns alcohol into sugar & stores it.

(You can read a bit here)
http://www.forbes.com/2005/08/10/cocktails-calories-lifestyle-cx_sy_0810feat_ls.html

After a night of drinking cocktails, most people will not only wake up the next morning with a screaming hangover, they'll wake up fatter too.

That's because the average serving of one ounce of 80-proof alcohol contains about 90 calories. And that's before mixers are added.

While most alcohol doesn't contain actual fat, its calories tend to be stored in the abdomen. "It's hard for the body to process and eliminate many alcohols at one time, and sugar makes us fat," says Michael George, a fitness expert and author of Body Express Makeover

If I can add something to what dkn1997 said -  along with eating the 5 or 6 small meals each day , and allowing yourself 1 day each week to eat unrestricted [ eating out / double pizza w/ ice cream sundae + pepperoni , etc]

Plan out what you are going to eat.  Keep it in mind, bring a list to the grocery store.
Make a list, say I will eat THIS for my first meal , then THIS, then THIS, etc  on Monday
then I will eat THIS, then THIS, etc  on Tuesday.

Without a plan it is so easy to just forage in the fridge and cabinets and regress to old habits.

There is scientific backing to allowing one day of binging a week.  The human body for hudreds of thousands of years was used to eating more sparsely most of the time and then gorging for a day whenever a deer or mammoth or whatever was killed - and the human had to eat as much as possible before decay or predators got the kill.
