Steering column paint for '73 e body

I recently pulled the steering column out of my wife's 'cuda. It appears someone painted it gloss black. I figured while it's out, I should scuff it and repaint it. I don't have the equipment to spray it with a spray gun. I was going to just use a spray can.
What shade of black should I use? Semi gloss black or semi flat black. I know it wont be correct, but it will better than the gloss black.
