Anybody have a recommendation on a timing set for a 383 built to stock 383 magnum specs.  My 383 2bbl had a single bolt timing set with nylon covered gear teeth.  Not sure how beefy to go.  Using a Mopar purple shaft magnum grind single bolt cam.

The Comp Cams "Magnum" double roller timing sets are very durable and sell for less than $50  :2thumbs:

But don't trust the dots!

I used Mopar performance one bolt timing gear set, 12 years ago on a 440,and I used a degree wheel, the dots were not even close, I fought with it for a few hrs trying all the marked settings (straight, + or - ) and nothing would get me even close to correct.
I called Mancinni racing, who I got the set from, and they told me line up the dots, but dont line them up at 6 and 12(the two dots right next to each other) line it up top gear dot at 12 o clock, and bottom gear at 12 o clock.

At that point I would try anything, and sure enough, it worked!

I never had ran into that before!
I have rebuilt a ton of engines, Final drives, gear reductions, and what not and never had to line up the Timing marks/dots like that.

Do all muscle car era Chrysler engines use the fiber gear from the factory?

There have been times that even going with both pointing up, the cam wjll be off.

You can see the pictures in my superbee restoration thread, but on Joe's advise I went with the Cloyes on my 383 magnum.

To be exact I ordered, for basically peanuts, the Cloyes 9-1104 x 3 piece "Street True" set. I first lined up the old gears on Zero / Zero, removed them and then carefully slipped the Cloyes set into place to make sure zero / zero lined up on them with nothing moving and it did perfectly. I then reset the cam to the 4 degree advance key way and buttoned everything up. Started up perfectly and runs nice, in the shop anyhow!  :yesnod:

After having those issues with the timing set that was to be installed with both dots up, I got to be a pro with my degree wheel, and it is easy enough to do, even if to just double check the factory markings.
I still even have a set of the Mopar Performance offset timing bushing, in the package to dial it in if need be.
