Are there any codes in the fender tag or in the VIN that would identify the rearend in my 72 Rallye Charger? Not sure if the Rallye cars came with any HD parts. Any info appreciated.

I'm not tag codes expert, but the axle is not matched with the specific model, but the engine and trans combo. Usually small blocks Low Performance are 8 1/4",  Big Blocks are the most used 8 3/4" same as High Performance Small Blocks. High Performance Big Blocks, specially 4 speeds began to get Dana 60 &/or 9 1/4" axle when they came out. This is more less the way they were installed.

Now, physically you can check which one got your car looking at this table:

Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

now about the specific codes there are several websites with this kind of table, however I don't think the axle code came onto the fender tag, but at buildsheet

Great info as usual. This really helps alot! Thank you :2thumbs:

The coding depends somewhat.

Say the car has the A35 towing package as one example. 3.23 required with HD rear axle, so 8 3/4" differential.

Nacho-RT74

Oh of course, thats a package code, all packages of any kind ( not just drivetrain ) were coded with A prefix ( you can check it on same website I linked, scroll it up )... where an specific axle and gear ratio was part of the package.

then you can check what it came on every package here ( thanks for the Alaskan_TA work ):

Rallye was mostly an appearance package, I believe the fender tag will tell you if you have an optioned rearend, i.e. suregrip (if added on),towing as mentioned before.

I know that all 340, 440 and 400 HP's got 8 3/4 for automatics for 73.

Here is an almost complete option list for 72, there are about 2-3 options missing that I know of, but should help you out.

well, a friend from another board got a 400 2bbls to part out with 8 1/4" axle :P

Fender tag will specify packages, and if the axle is specified on it of course will be one way to tell it, but not specific axle as an individual code as far I have learnt, just on buildsheet. The D code on fender tag should be pointing out just the tranny.
