Can someone tell me what axle code "4" means, it has a 8 3/4 under it, From the fender tag it came with Redline tires? What would the correct rims be? Green car with green interior with a white trunk stripe. The motor was said to be from a 69 Roadrunner and it is a 69 HP engine, but having trouble finding the vin on the lower edge of the block. It doesn't seem to have that raised surface on the passenger side. I have cleaned the whole edge off front to back and found nothing. The radiator seems to be from a 1965 mopar with a 383 by the part number on top, its bolted in the correct holes. I did get the front bumper with brackets, and the drivers side fender.

Bronzedodge

Not sure about the tires, but group 4 "04" is 3.23 non sure grip I believe, for '68.
Mopar forever!

Did you look to see if there is a VIN on the engine block at the back on the top edge where it bolts up to the transmission by the firewall ?
next project 70 Charger FJ5 green

No I didn't look there. For some reason I assumed the vin was on the lower edge starting in 69. Guess not... Found it! Had to removed the oil psi sending unit to get a good pic. It looks like I must have the sending unit from the 68 engine since it has orange paint on it. I think the engine is what I was told, out of a 69 RR, It has a Carter AVS H7 4429S carb. The engine numbers are: 8C160293.   sorry for the upside down pic. Wont stay rotated after I resize it.

BLK 68 R/T

No 440 4 barrel motors came in Roadrunners.

68 engines were turquoise, not orange.

Correct in 68 & 69, but not 70. 68 engines were turquoise, not orange.

Nice, your off to a good start on the home work part of it!!!

I found it weird, that an R/T would have an open 3.23 rear?!!?!
(unless a 4 speed, then automatic dana 60)
I only had one R/T and it was a 4speed so it had A Dana 3.54.

I also love the column shifted trans!!!!!!
It is cool to have a 440 Charger R/T with the grandpa column shift!!!!!
Nothing like power shifting on the column, My 383 is column shifted, and I would'nt have it any other way!!!(unless its a 4 speed, DUH!!!!!)

Also I think 1970 was the only year for a 440 in a Roadrunner, and it was a six Bbl, no 4bbls.

Edelbroke

Well I don't know then, Can anything else be determined by the block vin?

Bad B-rad

WOW 5 guys beat me to it!!!,LOL!!!
I think 68/69 Roadrunner was 383 RR engine, or optional Hemi.
1970 383 RR, or 440 6Bbl, or Hemi.

I may be wrong.
But the casting numbers on the side of the block, and the numbers on the ID pad, (D=1968)will help.
I am not sure about the Vin #'s on the block, because I think its only a partial vin, and only sequence #'s, if its full vin, then it will help.
But they will only help with year.

Bad B-rad

If 8C160293 is the engine S/N, then all I can tell you is: 8=1968  build year
C=Jefferson,MI (plant)

160293= build sequence number

Moparpoolman

8C160293 would be the last 8 digits on the Dash VIN if it were original to the car.  The trans would have the same number stamped in the same spot if it were out of a 1968 model year car, doesn't seem to be but there is a PK________number on the driverside rail on the trans that will tell you what it is.  The Engine assembly number looks to be October 20th which would be 1967 and a cast date of 1967 would be found on the block.  Oct 20th is a little to far away from the Feb. 19 1968 build date of the car to be original anyway.

Homerr

The 1968 registry in my sig will run you through all the codes and tell you what they are.

Edelbroke

Here's the block casting number. 25364305    4 - 6 - 67.
On the top pad it has a "D 440"  So this would a 1969 engine correct? With a casting date of 4-6-67??

Bad B-rad

on the top ID pad (yours says D440  )
The letter is the model year, the year always goes before the engine displacement.
A=1965
B=1966
C=1967
D=1968
E=1969
F=1970
G=1971
H=1972
J=1973
K or 4=1974

SO it is a 1968 engine, cast in 67, built in 68

Man, this looks just like I 68' I sold here in Michigan many year ago. I regret selling it. It was a sleeper from hell. It was about this rough in flat black primer but I had a built 440 in it with a 10" 3500 stall , 4:10 8-3/4 and a NOS Cheater 250 shot plate system on it. MSD box & a shift light hidden in the glove box. I will have to look for some pictures of it.
