So pulled the tranmission . Measured the back my torque converter .  It might be hard to see but the measurement for bolt holes is 10" . This is a surprise as I always thought it had the stock converter in it .  The transmission itself is at the shop . They just did a basic pull down to see what shape it's in. They told me it actually has a 74 valve body in it as well.

This is suprising but good news as this means I don't need to get a new flex plate for the new TQ converter !

a stock converter would measure bigger correct ?

Lots of people call that a 10" converter others call it an 11" but it's actually a factory 10 3/4" converter. The ring gear measures about 1".
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

you belive that is a factory TQ? is there away to tell forb sure

The factory only made them in 11" (10 3/4)  or 12" (11 3/4) for the 727. The 11" had a 10" bolt circle. Yours appears to be a factory 11" unit. A lot of builders used them as cores so it may be stock or modified, no way to tell unless it is opened. Generally the beefed up units come with 7/16 bolt pads, - as used behind the hemi, yours appears to have the factory 5/16 pads.

I have to replace the converter anyway . The part that slides onto the tranny input shaft has a nasty worn groove from the pooched bearing . I was just curious as to what convertee it would have been

The small drain plug and the wide ring gear make it a '73-'77. The drain plug was discontinued in '78.

73-77 . interesting , so my grandfather had a new TQ and valve body installed . Kinda neat to piece together some history !

FYI:

TQ= ThermoQuad

TC= Torque Converter
