Hello,

How to decode a 727 transmission and Came behind 440 ?

I think that's a 67/68  383 trans, let me get my books out.
the pk2801543 is the PN I think
I dont know the #'s by heart.
I will look when I get home, but I had a 67 383 (2BBl) so thats how I remember that.

Bad B-rad

I THINK its a 383 2BBL trans
made on 11/2/67?????

By the time I get home and check it out I am sure someone who know this stuff WAY better then I will correct me.

I think trans uses  10,000 day calendar dates
so  2288 would be the date.

PK= Kokomo transmission plant

2801543= A 727 from a '68 383-2 in a B or C-body

2288= Build date November 2, 1967
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Sweet, I was right!!!! I only remembered because I had a 383 2Bbl, before.

So is there any problem to use the transmission on 440 ? Do I need upgrade transmission

Bad B-rad

There are no problems as far as it will bolt right up, and as long as transmission is in good shape, it will work.
When I had my 383 trans rebuilt, the transguy was able to install some extra clutch plates in it,then it had from the factory.(he put what a Hemi trans would have had)
  I guess the larger Hemi and 440 engines got more clutchs installed from the factory, then the 383 engines to help the transmission last with the extra torque of the larger engines.

So can i put more clutches to be seam as for 440 ???

You can add more clutch discs, But I am not a transmission rebuilder, and I do not know all the little things a 727 guy would know.
When my guy rebuilt mine, he said he maybe able to add the extra clutches/steels, if there was enough room in the drum.
And he was able to do so.
Your trans and mine were both 1967, 383's so they should be the same.
Be he said something to the effect of that sometimes the transmissions don't have room to add the extra clutch plates and steels.
I guess maybe some trans have different drums?

Again I am not a trans guy, and my 727 was rebuilt in 2004/2005, so it was a while ago.
I also had him install a trans go " Shift Reprogramming Kit" .
And in drive it shifted like an automatic should, but it could be down shifted at any rpm into any gear, and will hold any gear until you manually move the shifter. So most of the time I shifted the car, because it was awesome!!!!!!
The very second you moved that shifter lever from 1 to 2, it shifted, fast and hard, same for 2-3.
Again in "D" it shifted automaticly, and shifted much better then stock, but the manual shifting was where it was at for me.

The 383-2 is kinda soft for a 440, lots of internal differences. Having said that, after 50 years you won't know what's inside until it's opened, could have upgrades already.
