69 vs 70 4 speed Shifter mechanisms, looking for some feedback

For a B body with a console, I know that the shifter mechanism for 70 with a pistol grip shifter is different than a 69 with a ball type handle to accommodate the longer throw.

I have read that if you use a 70 console handle in a 69 mechanism your knuckles get very close to the dash.

I am torn between which shifter I want to use in my 68.  Right now I have a 69 Hurst ball type set up that is fine, but I also have a 70 console shifter hanging on my wall that I really want to try out but don't want to drop $250+ on a new mechanism to just see if I like it.

I am thinking about trying out the 70 pistol grip handle in my existing 69 mechanism and if I really like it, sell the 69 mechanism and get a 70 one.

The feedback I am looking for is if anyone has put a 69 ball handle in the 70 mechanism?  My reasoning is if a year from now I want to switch back to the ball shifter, will it work properly and perhaps give me a shorter throw?

So many things to think about during the winter months!!  :scratchchin: :shruggy: :drive:

I can't answer your question but I can tell you I am doing the same with my car...
Bought a 70 console pistol grip and will run it in my 68 charger.
I don't care if its not correct, it just looks so damn cool.
But I got lucky and bought the shifter and mechanism together.

I have a '70 mechanism with a '69 Hurst console shifter. In 1st and 3rd, the front of the ball is 4" from the dash. The throw to 2nd and 4th is 3 7/8", measured at ball height.
