Yeah the EVs are posing new problems for accidents & breakdowns.

The EV concept is 100+ years old.  But the new lithium batteries (which helped turn the tide and make them more practical) are not.  They haven't gotten 100 years of development & idiot-proofing yet.  The next 20 years will be big for EVs.

It's easy to imagine this worrying flipped around.  Think of an alternate universe where internal combustion was the new tech just starting to be adopted.   They wouldn't have things figured out yet:  Where & how to mount the gas tank.  How exactly to construct it.  Controlling for spillage when you refuel.  Gotta put a steel firewall between the engine & passengers.  What kind of fire extinguishers are effective on it.  Etc.

The older generation of EV fans would probably be pointing to the Hindenberg.  "You expect us to believe it's safe to ride around in a big gasoline bomb that uses explosions to move itself?  FFS, at least electric batteries aren't normally one spark away from exploding!"

When GM earlier this year started recalling Bolts, it issued a warning to owners of the EV: don't charge your car battery to 100 percent. Normally, this would be easy enough to do. But what if your charger got hacked?

Last year, researchers from the Southwest Research Institute in Texas successfully hacked the most popular charging system used in North America. The hack limited the charging rate, then blocked charging, and then overcharged the battery. The reason for the hack: "This was an initiative designed to identify potential threats in common charging hardware as we prepare for widespread adoption of electric vehicles in the coming decade," according to lead researcher Austin Dodson.

Mission accomplished.

Really we are using General Motors as an example of the quality of EV batteries that are produced today? The company that brought you the Cobalt ignition switch disaster. How many people died in that debacle? What else would you expect from GM but another disaster. Does anyone here remember Ford's disaster with the Pinto and its exploding gas tank?

Joke about it if you wish.  :rotz:  But real people did die in them.

Fuel cars catch fire and burn up on the road or in garages all the time, but nobody is saying we should have stuck with the horse and buggy :shruggy: ...., well, maybe some Amish folks.

Just like anything else, the EV technology will continue to improve and someday we won't think twice about it.

I didn't watch all of it but yes the EV fires are pretty crazy/scary.

So much stored energy it doesn't compare to fuel as the batteries are under the entire passenger compartment.

Plus, fuel isn't stored at it's max potential energy (mixed at the perfect ratio with compressed oxygen)

Hola Folks,                23 September 2021

Don't have an electric vehicle and don't want one. We like gasoline, especially without Alcohol mixed with it. That stuff is meant for drinking, not driving.

Our question is this: If we were to completely switch to EVs, where would all the necessary electricity come from? Some areas of this country already experience brown outs and blackouts due to inadequate power infrastructure. Is switching from petroleum to electricity going to resolve the infrastructure shortfall? No it won't.

How much does the battery for a Tesla weigh? About 1200 pounds / 544 Kilo. That's a lot of weight to be hauling around. Fully charged and discharged, the battery essentially remains the same weight. So, when your fancy EV is on its last few watts, it's still lugging around that heavy old battery. In a gasoline powered vehicle with a 25 gallon tank, there's about 175 lbs of fuel in the tank. As you drive, the fuel is consumed, lightening the load on the engine causing better fuel economy. EVs don't have the same luxury.

What about EV recharging vs Refueling a gasoline powered vehicle? We can refuel our truck in about 10 minutes and be on our way. How long does it take to recharge an EV? The best we could find for the Tesla is 2.5 hrs using the "Juicebox Pro 80. Guess taking a driving vacation will require careful planning and lots of vacation time.

Then what do you do when your lithium battery goes ten toes up? No problem, just take your Hoover Mobile to the local Tesla dealer and have them swap in a new battery pack. No big deal, just a paltry $16,000.00 and change. There's also a recycling charge that runs approximately $4.50 per pound. Just a minor expense at $5400.00 and change.

Personally, EVs can make sense for local stuff like trips to McDonalds for the best tasting tasteless burgers on the planet, visits to Wally World for the latest in Chinese products, etc.

We like the convenience of good old gasoline and hope it remains the fuel of the future. Besides that, it smells better than a charging battery.

Last but not least, there's nothing that sounds better than a finely tuned 426 Hemi burning lead laced 110 Octane Blue Sunoco 260.

Best Always
