Hissing brake pedal

I just pulled up to home with a hard brake pedal and a hissing sound coming from the pedal area.
Engine does not sound like it has a vaccum leak, just the hissing when the pedal is pressed.

I guess it's the booster leaking? (Oh joy). Could be something else before ordering a new one?

I had this on my charger before I had the booster rebuilt a few years ago.  The booster is leaking internally which is that hissing noise you hear.  The lack of vacuum assist is what is causing your brake pedal to be hard making it need extra effort to stop the car.

Yeah, I thought this was the case 
I need to drive the car 100 miles on the open road, is this safe. Is it just like having no power brakes or is it more difficult. I seem to be able to stop ok. Thougths

You will be able to stop but your braking performance will be diminished.  Pretty much you will have a lack of power assist and it will feel like manual brakes instead of power assisted brakes.

Changing a booster is not the most fun job........

I had this issue last year. Thankfully it was over the winter and I was able to send it off to booster Dewey for a rebuild. The bonus is that it came back looking almost factory new.
Not the easiest part I've removed, getting it off the firewall was the most challenging part of it for me.

Not too bad with a couple feet of wobble extensions and the instrument cluster out.
