Cam Advance or Retard???

I'm building a 440, .030" over with 906 heads; the compression will be a little over 9:1. The cam I'm using is a Lunati Voodoo cam with .494 in. lift and .513 ex. lift, advertised duration is 271 in./279 ex. and @ .050" 226 in./234 ex. I have a comp cams timing gear set, the crank gear has three positions, -4 degrees, 0, and +4 degrees. The paperwork that came with says something about having the cam at 106 degrees making it 4 degrees advanced. I'm a young guy here, so looking to see what the Mopar veterans have to say...should I advance, retard, or leave it alone, and how exactly do I make sure this thing is lined up right?

Thank you!

Phil

if the cam card says 106, that is what I would put it at in your application, SO you need to get all the tools to degree the cam shaft, don't trust the dots on the gears.

Just from my experience putting it on zero or straight up seems to get the centerline of the cam the closest to the card spec's. I degreed a few cams on a couple of ford engines and a couple of mopar engines and putting it 4 degrees advanced or 4 degrees retard throws the centerline off alot and putting it at zero seems to get it within one or two degrees of what the centerline should be. You will never notice if it's one or two degrees off and it should run and sound good there. I always put them at zero now on a mild street hydraulic cam and they always seem to do fine.....

Got the degree wheel coming in the mail and have a dial indicator...just need to figure out how to do it. I don't know if it's true, but I read somewhere that advancing helps with lower compression ratios...anyone know about this?

You may want to read my sticky here in case the dots on the gear don't make sense. It may save you a bunch of time.: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,123110.0.html

the next ? is . what compression height piston did they use, part# ????, have you checked how far down the hole is the piston at TDC ?

Here is your Cam Card

http://www.lunatipower.com/CamSpecCard.aspx?partNumber=60303

It has 4 degrees advance built into the cam already

But like any engine builder will tell you

Check Degree the cam to make sure everything is within spec

Glad i went with the Howards Cam 9 Key Way on my 432 Stroker , as i debated on my first engine build
