Did the 69 chargers use 1157 bulbs for all 3 bulbs in the tail lights?

moparfan53

No, they used 2 1157 and 1 1095 per side. The 1095 is not usually available at parts stores, but some online bulb stores have them. What I did, and most people I know with 69-70 Chargers do, is to use a 67 or 89 bulb instead. They are very close to the 1095 specs other than having a smaller glass part. They look fine to me. With parking lights on, all 3/6 bulbs seem the same brightness.

That is what I thought. 2 were for the running lights/turn signal the other was just for when you turn the lights on. Classic industries says 1157 and 1156

Yes, I have seen people use the 1156 because physically it looks like the 1095, but it is much brighter so looks like it is a brake light when on. A 1157 is 27w/8.3w. A 1156 is 26.9w only.

For reference; 67 bulb is 7.5w, 89 is 8w. There is also a 97 that will work, it is 9.3w. I use the 89 because it is closest in brightness to the 1157. As I said above, with the 89, all the bulbs look the same brightness.

Thanks, all good information! I think I am going to put LEDS in the rear tail lights.

That's what I did. The brake lights no longer move the ammeter  ;)

I changed my 70's rear bulbs to all 1157's......just had to get 2 extra sockets for each inner lights

It was a red Daytona. I saw the episode when the car was done and given to the owner. The lights were on and I noticed the wrong bulbs right away. I had the same reaction as you... how could they not notice the two bright inner lights? :shruggy:

Mark claims to be such a Mopar expert but anyone, expert or not,  could see something was not right.

I did not see their Facebook page, I assume it is the same car.

At the time, I think it was talked about either here or Moparts.

That is an excellent idea!  :2thumbs:  I had not thought of that. Having 6 brake lights going on instead of 4 might also be a good idea safety wise.

Much easier to find 1157 bulbs as well.....plus you get 3 turn signals per side and all 6 brake lights

Nacho-RT74

And make them sequential!

After a friend of mine contact him for a lower control arm question, to be sure which one was for A and which one was for B body and he gave him wrong answer, I can't say is an expert anymore. Something I could tell "easilly" after a fast research.
