so this might have been a rash decision but i traded/purchased two 440's with 727 auto transmissions for my two project cars.  :2thumbs:
back story. ones a 72 and one is a 77. Plus I already had the 73 727 transmission i paid $70 for.
More than likely i will work on one at a time. Since the 69 is more together and in better shape that may be the first one to get the RV General mayhem treatment first. (yes i will save the original slant 6 for you purist. And yes it will be rebuilt just in case i decide to re-insert it into my limited number 69 charger with slant 6/ 3 speed on the column car down the road.)
i will be headed out tomorrow to get the 72 combo...wish me well. Not sure what i am really getting, it could be a steel crank in the motor, and the trans could have the better clutch packs and such or i could wind up with an industrial pile of crap, ya never know. The purchase price was low and my intentions were to at least get a running engine trans combo for a start. I can always sell the engine and transmissions if its not what i want, or i can just keep them for the $$ i will have invested.

next up...get this stuff home, figure out what exactly that i have and see if I can just throw gaskets, seals at one of them to get it installed and running in the charger. I have a buddy with an exhaust shop, and glass packs are pretty cheap, so...
items i can buy that will hopefully fit both...
Edelbrock RPM intake
Carburetor
Distributor
MSD ignition
the exhaust (mufflers, tailpipes etc.)
Radiator (not sure if the radiator from the RV will work or not)
among other small items

things that i know i will need that i do not currently have:
auto Shifter
auto shifter console
another 8 3/4 inch rear end for the 69 ( and sure grip locker)
another fuel tank
new fuel lines from back of car to front
fuel pressure regulator (x's 2)

Check the transmissions you plan on using to make sure the tailshaft housing has the mounting ears for the shifter bracket. I think they were omitted from later transmissions if I remember right.

boy that would be a bummer... i did read one of John K's post that said it could be easily changed out tho

i wonder if my 73 car 727 has the shifter holes? picture posted

The dogbone shaped holes in front of where the mount goes.
Edit: as per John K, yes the tailshaft housing is easy to change. Easier to do while out though instead of installing it in the car and then going oh s@&t!

thats great info. Evidently my (car 727) may have been in a column shift vehicle for it does not have the dog bone bracket holes :(

at least i can change it out before installing it.

Eastwood aluminum radiators.180 bucks new.
Thrush welded mufflers. 35 each (flowmaster knockoffs)
Turbo action shifter, pricey but worth it.

thanks for reminding me Joe,

i have a large dodge radiator but am not sure it will work, i need to dig it out and look at it. Which side does my top and bottom hoses need to exit to fit a 440?

i am good with thrush mufflers (always liked the flowmaster sound)actually i have a set that i was going to put on my 51 ford F1 but they can be sacrificed for my General! :)

i have a winters cable shifter reverse pattern (it can be used either way) i kinda wanted an original but this would get me rolling with the proper linkage mounted on tranny i assume.
its been on several of my cars, (my 82 GT, 79 big block mustang coupe, i guess its only fitting that it goes on my GL). :)

I "think" the winters gates are setup similar to turboaction. But not 100% sure, whereas the pbysical gate will not work properly because the travel distance between park and reverse are different between ford chevy and dodve transmissions. Simple modifications to get around it if so. Just something to doublecheck with winters before you pull your hair out trying to get it adjusted.

In my experience (35 plus years) all 727's have these dog bone brackets on the transmissions. Regardless if it was a column or floor shifter.

The absence of dog bones is a truck thing, passenger cars had them column or auto.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Yea this one nor the 73 trans has the dog bone, so I will have to look at either making a bracket somehow or going to a turbo action or winters shifter or other shifter. But the this 440 is secure and headed home with me now. Thermal quad and all lol

question: John, so is the dog bones located on the tail housing? So if a tail housing for a car can be found then I would have my bracket for stock shifter correct?

Thats a short tail, non slip yoke trans... only goodnfor guts parts.

garner7555

I just put a Winters Sidewinder shifter on my car last week and it does not use the dog bone holes.  It bolts under pan bolts and the large hole that sticks out of the left side of the case, directly behind the shifter arm.  I think it would fit any 727 transmission from the looks of it.

You Still need a slip yoke style transmission.  I know from experience that it's not a matter of switching the tail shaft either.
I have the same truck transmission as I do, from my old truck.  It's been sitting and waiting for another truck that needs one, and it only has 2k Miles on it.
They are hard to sell, or even give away.

The shafts are different lengths. Its morr then just swapping the tail housings.

yea i was referring to the car trans that i also have 1973 model (without dog bones).

i guess if you gonna dig in you might as well dig deep haha (referring to changing the output shaft, tail-housing, and slip yoke...)

back in the day (damn its been nearly 20 years) there were track guys we all knew, that did transmissions, specialized in FORD C4's, C6's and even Mopar transmission guys, but unfortunately i have lost a lot of buddy's over this time frame. Car crashes, heart attacks, etc. Sad but true. I don't really want to be the transmission specialist, but its looking more and more like i may be doing a crash coarse in it if I want it done right. I just can not afford to pay $1600-$2000 to a TCI or Performance Automatic for a basic rebuild (plus i have seen and heard horror stories of ppl spending that much and their trans still being a piece of crap.

Here's a pic of the "dog bones". Yes, the tail can be changed but it requires complete disassembly of the trans, the output shaft is the last part to come out.

thanks John! Yea I was thinking that may be the case since its mounted thru the back of the transmission case housing with the output shaft.  I guess since i cant use the RV one I may as well tear it down and learn something
I will wait until the outside temps get back up we are headed down to 20 tonight, 17 the next night and then 15 the following night. To cold for me, plus the wind chill is lower than that, Unusual for South West Alabama

It's out of a modern challenger.  My car is a driver so I'm making it comfortable.  Lexus seats will be going in soon.

As for transmission building, there are a few transmission shops close to me who still do good work for reasonable. (around $300 labor + parts)  I'm also in Alabama, but I'm northeast AL.  Not sure if you would want to drive that far?

i like it, may be something i go with until i can figure out exactly what i want. Lexus seats will be nice, that may be another option for me on seats, it seems they are more plentiful
yea that's what i am hunting..$300 plus parts would be a sweet deal.
South west Alabama here, i drive all over the southeast for work, all the time. no biggie to drive to north Alabama I have a good friend of mine who lives in Molton. In fact he has a camp 300 yards from my house
