Why Is The 70 Considered Lesser ?

So I've noticed the 70's sometimes take a back seat to the 68's and 69's, why is that ? My personal favourite is the 68 because it has the meanest grille but I reckon the 70 is better over the 69 because of the grille , plus the 70 has some nice colours .

This is just a fun post to start some discussion , no offence intended .

Many on here consider quite the opposite....and see the 70 as the pinnacle of the Bs with the most development and best interior. I have nothing further to say........lol!

The big loop bumper gets to some. Me? I don't  mind it. When I bought my 70 in 2000, I did consider changing the front end to a 1969 design but mine was in such good condition, I couldn't make sense of changing it. I have seen these with the front bumper painted body color and it does help to tone down the large appearance.

I used to say that the 68 Charger was my clear favorite and I used to not like the 70 bumper but the 70 bumper has grown on me so much that I can no longer pick a favorite bumper/grille. I pretty much just like every 68-70 Charger feature. There's just so much character in the 2nd gen Chargers.

I love the 68-69 Chargers, and the 70 is a close second for me. I used to really not like the 70 grilles, but they have grown on me. I really like the higher end 70 interior door panels, and love burnt orange interiors with pistol grip shifters which only 70s have. So there are features from each year that I like...

My best guess is that 50 something year old guys who grew up watching the dukes have positive memories  of the TV show, and the association with other 69 model muscle cars. It's probably safe to say muscle cars as a whole peaked in 69, and the 69 Charger is lumped in with the rest of them.

With the younger crowd, (under 30), this correlation doesn't seem as strong, and I notice way more Dom Toretto references than Bo Duke. I don't think most guys under 30 consider the 70 inferior. Especially since most of them got their first impression of a classic Charger from the Fast and Furious movies.

Just my experience. For what it's worth, I prefer the 70 first, then the 68, then the 69. But it's really like choosing blonde, brunette or redhead.

I think its less about tv influances and more about the front bumper.
The grill is one of the iconic charger focal points and the 68 -69 grills are perfect and crisp without being overbearing to the rest of the car.
The 70 bumper is really a great idea but combined with the longer fenders it gives the car a different feel to the front clip.
I could live without the tailpanel trim also.

Alot of people have the sentiment torweds a 68's taillights.

One of the car mags did a comparo and I was shocked that they said the 69 grille was hands down the best. I was shocked. For me the 68 will always be the best (same w/ tail lights), and why they'd split that beautiful front I still don't understand. I tolerate our chrome front, glad that they at least opened it up again and only cuz I can't let myself think about it too long or look at it too hard, specially when I think that disco balls weren't far behind. I just didn't wanna wait/hope to find a 68, and fortunately I've yet to see that grille in my rear view, all that crisp, clean maw bearing down on me. If and when I do, I'll probly go home and mask our silly loop, or maybe by then it'll have grown on me but I doubt it. The 68 will always rule  :coolgleamA:

The 69 will always be my favorite due to the grill and taillights then a 68.  I have passed on several 70's as I do not car for the snow plow bumper grill combo.  I will say the 70 does have the best interior but thats where that ends.

While I'm a 70 Charger fanatic, I can appreciate the 68 and 69, just that they don't excite me like a 70 does, I like the 70's chrome wrap around bumper, the tail panel lightcover, and yes the "fake" R/T door scoops covering up the "fake" door scoops/scallops  :icon_smile_big: the color options, engine options, interior design, seats, pistol grip shifter, rear spoiler, ralley wheels, racing mirrors, stripe/paint/decal options just put it over the top in regards to the 68-9 models that seem to pale in comparison... I think the 68-9's popularity was "cemented" in the motorheads mind by the likes of culture classics like Bullitt, DMCL, DOH...

Now if you want to talk about a Charger of less appeal...it starts with the 2 liter Coke bottle 3rd generation that the Charger legend died

Sublime/Sixpack

I think to some it's mostly the loop front bumper on the '70 that they don't like. Some people don't like the '70 Coronet's front bumpers either. It took me a while to get used to the Coronet's bumpers, but now I think they look mean.
Personally back in the day I didn't care all that much for the '68 Charger when it came out. I liked the '68 Coronet better.
Then the '69 Charger came out and I thought it looked sharp, still do. But these days I actually prefer the '68 over the '69 (maybe I've seen too many '69's).
When the '70 came out I really liked it but only in the R/T model. The Six Pack was now available, a Hurst Pistol Grip shifter, Rallye wheels, some wild colors, and I liked the side R/T door scoops. In the right color combo, power train and certain other options the '70 is my favorite. But I enjoy seeing any nice '68, '69, or '70.

68 is my favorite, but any 2nd gen Charger is above anything else .

QuoteThere's just so much character in the 2nd gen Chargers.

honestly i like the 68 better now that i have one. The 69 second and of course the 70 third. BUT they are all awsome in their own right.

once i get these two started and headed in the right direction I will probably seek out a 70 just to complete my 2nd Gen Charger collection...lord help me! lol

It all comes down to preference. I was a 68 charger nut. My first car was a 68. When I wanted to get another, I couldn't find one in my range and found a 70. as I worked on it, it really grew on me. Now it is my favorite. next will be the 68. Last is the 69. So I go against the majority. I love the tail lights of the 70 with the body color and tail panel better than the blacked out rear. interior options, and the open grill.

Because an orange 70 with a confederate flag on the roof just looks silly.  :D

Because of the big loop (heavy) front bumper.

1968 was clean and fresh.

1969 was another step forward.

I personally like the 70 RT better.    The door scoops, front bumper, rear end.    I do have sellers remorse on selling my 70 RT.  When I was getting my Bird, I had to sell one of my Chargers and as of now, I do wish I sold my 68 instead.

I love all 68-72 Chargers.  73/74 Chargers imo is where it ended:Twocents:

I like some cues from all years. 68 and 70 grille, 69/70 tail lights. I like the blacked out tail light surround on 69's. I like the 68 tail stripe. The 70 interiors. If I were to pick a winner I guess it would be the 70 high impact colours, but I do like many of the regular hues as well, white being rare and on top of the list. My car came with the 70 door scoops, but I binned them during the resto.....

I think the 70 is the greater of all evils when it comes to restoring them. Seeing as they don't reproduce the front clip. That, it's rarity, and people using some of the available front clips for Daytona clones, makes restoring a 70 a more difficult chore.

I'm in my late 30's and the F&F 70 Charger has more of an imprint on me than the DOH 69 or Bullit 68. But I do remember the Blade 68 too........

I'll agree with that.  All three years are beautiful, all have styling cues I like.  The 70 bumper is polarizing it seems, like the 70 Coronet, and the 72 Fury to a lesser extent.  It must be a pain to anyone who bought a partial 70 and had to chase down a front clip.

I really like the loop bumper, front fenders, door scoops, high back buckets and the tail panel trim of the 70. The one year longitudinal stripes really make it too. All years are winners though.

May be the best I've ever seen the chrome loop look in that purple. Nice balance, makes it less obtrusive/garish. Beautiful.
