A much better video clip of the recent unfortunate R/T Lee jump

The best view is the slo-mo high angle at the end of the clip.

(See?  What did I tell ya?  It was a hell of a lot more than "20-30 people" there watching that jump.)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If anybody is just seeing this incident for the first time, we've already talked all about it (at great length) on several threads last week here at DC.com.

Even all the "Dukes" fans agree it should never have happened.  It was not a "Dukes" fan club event at all.  The Charger was owned by a Chevy shop and they insisted on jumping it.  We couldn't talk them out of it.

Agreed!  A much better video clip.

Man, he was movin' pretty good when he hit that ramp.

I'd say he was lucky the pitch of the ramp wasn't steeper as he could have landed on his hood/roof.

:o , nice jump.  I will withhold any other opinions hehe

Nice footage. thanks for sharing Keeping my comments to my self.

I quit following that thread as it was just making me angry but now I feel I have to ask, how much did those f'ing idiots end up getting for the car?

Blown70

This honestly is a product of the DUKES.  So now some idiot (exp. chevy guy) this is all they think of Chargers.

I hate it but, the metality came from the popularity of the DUKES

Wasn't it just a year or so ago that the Duke fans jumped a General Lee themselves? I don't know what club is affiliated with who, but I think Travis Bell did it?

JimShine

Travis Bell did the first jump of this nature back in '03 as the 25th anniversary of the first GL jump. That event is what has triggered all of these other jumps.

JimShine

Oh, and here are the jumps I am aware of so far (I believe there was one done overseas last year):

TB's 25th anniversary jump in '03
Ben "The Cooter" Jones Dukesfest Jump '04
Dukesfest '05
MTV Dukes Special jump in Georgia '05
The Michigan jump '06

Its time to stop. Once was more than enough.

We need to re-enact the end of Vanishing Point and slam a few 69 Camaros into bulldozers in the hometown of the "Chevy Loving Charger Jump Clowns".

Mike DC

Travis Bell basically gets the credit for starting the live-show jumps.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But you have to understand that Travis did it in a different setting than what we've got now.  When he did it, that was thought to be IT  for the General Lee ever jumping again.

In 2003, the original TV-series DOH cast had done its last TV movie special.  There was no talk of any new DOH theatrical movies.  There was no "Dukesfest."

Travis never originally planned any more than just the one jump for the show's 25th anniversary.  (And he's never done another one since then either.)  At the time, nobody thought we'd ever see any more than the one new jump from the fan club.

We should not jump any classic car Mopar or brand X, you can't fight stupid with more stupid,  These people could care less about any brand of classic car.
1969 Dodge Charger 500 440/727
1970 Challenger convertible 340/727
1970 Plymouth Duster FM3
1974 Dodge Dart /6/904
1983 Plymouth Scamp GT 2.2 Auto
1950 Dodge Pilot house pick up

Ghoste

Actually, I think the only way you can fight stupid is with stupid but in all seriousness, my post was meant sarcastically.
I couldn't destroy any old car just for laughs.

he definitly was first, nobody came close to it before the 25th anniversary jump, and until there is another big milestone, there is NO reason to do it, and really not even ever again.

I feel it is not CREDIT he gets, but BLAME. Hey, you and I know more than probably anyone else here about what else he is blamed for, but the jump transcends our fan club and gets the attention of non-fans (ie Charger fans) who see that anniversary jump as the start of all this nonsense. Whatever quibbles we have within our community is not really what outsiders see. The 25th jump and what it kicked off is.

Mike DC

Yeah, Travis does get blamed for that as much as "credited."
But I guess I still view it as "credit" because it was a great moment in my life and I'm so glad that it happened.

People can moan and groan about it, but those of us who were in the Dukes fan world at the time know the deal.  There really was no future for Dukes on the horizon.  That Charger in 2003 really was just a 318 parts-car shell that had virtually no chance of a resto.  As far as the NAGLFC was concerned, it really was a one-time jump for the diehards.

Whatever has happened after that is someone else's doing.

---------------------------------------------

And you couldn't even fund a GL jump just based on the diehard fans, either!
You couldn't even dream of profiting from a full-blown stunt show with just the members of the two fan clubs.

So far, I've managed to be standing there in person for all five of the live GL jumps you listed above.
And let me tell you:  For every one single diehard DOH fan like me who commits the sin of "supporting" another GL jump by attending the event, there's another 25 slack-jawed yokels showing up locally to watch the show.  I know they're not big DOH fans because I'm standing around talking to them every time.  (I'm often listening to someone informing me that the jump won't go any higher than Tom's 5-foot takeoff ramps, and the car will survive the landing just fine because it's a real "General Lee.")

The local-yokel crowd is what really sells enough tickets to keep these shows happening.

Ghoste

I'm suppose that is the case with the Chevy crew jumping the GL too.  It's still too bad that someone was willing to buy the shell when they were done.  It would have been nice to see them lose their shirts on the whole deal.
Of course, for all I know, they did.

I agree 110%! I remember in that particular period of time it felt like nobody else gave a damn about The Dukes outside of our little club (maybe a dozen real supporters?). The show was pulled from TV, and it seemed we lost any chance at having a retro revival. That was a high point in the community for sure (and it stirred up a bit of angst on the old D-C.com forum too). It was a thrilling time and nobody ever thought it would cascade into this. The crowds showed us we were not alone. And that was a great thing too.  But again, some outsiders still see those things differenly and not only blame not only Travis, but our community. It is not fair. But There isn't much any of us can do about it but educate them.
