So I just went to see a 70 Charger and was about to buy the car and I noticed the vin is 1 digit different to the registration document ( I'm in the UK )

The vin on the dash starts with XP as it should but on the registration document it starts with XO

He has a copy of the US title and it's XO on there too , is this just simply a common error that happens on US titles or should I be concerned about something else ? The car has been in the UK since 2005 and I believe the car would have been registered based on what's on the US documents.

Just to add the guy who is selling the car seems trustworthy and has owned the car 8 years and he thinks it was just a mistake that's happened in the US.

Here's the vin below, thanks for any help.

GO SELL CRAZY SOMEWHERE ELSE WE ARE ALL STOCKED UP HERE

The bigger issue goes beyond the title typo, that VIN tag had obviously been moved.

Why?

70 sublime

Let the seller get the ownership straightened out first so the paperwork matches the number on the car
If he really wants to sell it this will be an issue for anyone looking to buy it

Well, I just got educated on VIN's earlier but seeing the O is right next to the P on the keyboard most likely a typo. Anyways check the stampings on the radiator support and deck lid, from what I understand they should match the vin if so your ok, but like others let the seller fix it and save yourself the headache...

Thanks for the replies, regarding the why the vin has been removed in the past, maybe just it was removed because of a replacement dash or the dash being painted a different colour ?

Hi, I'm in the UK too....and you need to get that sorted. The VIN must match the owners docs exactly here. If not you could be in all sorts of trouble if an insurance claim should come about. Effectively you would have a DVLA owners doc that is NOT for your Charger...if the VIN is not the same then it's not the doc for the right car....silly I know...but that's all the court or insurance company will see.....and you know as well as me that insurance companies will use any excuse not to pay. "This is not the owners doc for that car and therefore not the one we insured...no payout!"

Just be thankful you have the original (or maybe not looking at  those incorrect rivets!) Vin. Mine came with nothing.... so one was allocated by the DVLA....quite a simple process. At least they let me have an age related number plate (G reg) ...I was worried they were going to make me have a Q plate for a while.

And before anyone says, I'm fully aware that my car might have a dubious history...but it was affordable and now has a clean UK title that no one can take away! Would love to know it's history though.

Thanks mate, what vin did the DVLA give you then ? Just a generic number ? Did you have to put that on the dash ? Any pics of your car ? I may have seen it at shows as I go to a lot in the London/Surrey area.

alfaitalia

I don't post pics of mine...not until the reveal! Should be complete by end of next year. You won't have seen in...never been on the road in the UK...and you won't see it at shows either....except my local ones and a few cruises.... Can't stand the pompous know all's that go to them!

My VIN a a generic DVLA issued one...std 17 digit one. Means nothing as far as I know.

Cool, I think with insurance claims though they would just go on the reg number because when you get insurance quotes they never ask for the vin number only the reg.

alfaitalia

Not if you go with classic car insurance....guess it depends on the company you go with.

With any possible damage claim - the adjuster can look at the numbers.

If they do not match the policy or if the car has been VIN swapped - no claim.

I'd be concerned about this.
The tag has obviously been removed at some point so you need to know why.
Has the dash been painted or not?
Do the numbers on the vin match the numbers which are stamped elsewhere on the car?
Which car is this?
Do you have a pic?
As the Mopar hobby is so small in the uk chances are someone on here will be familiar with the car.

I'm not very knowledgeable about the 70.....but I don't think the numbers stamped about the body match the VIN anyway.......?

I must admit I've not had a '70 either,so I guess we'll have to wait for someone else to chime in  :2thumbs:

The radiator support number and the number under the trunk weatherstrip on the driver side quarter should match the VIN number from 1969 and up, so in this case 1970, yes should match.

Is it green with odd coloured front fenders and hood by any chance?

alfaitalia

No.....was red (R5 I'd guess) originally (and rusty!)...now it's primer grey! I imported it direct from New York State so doubt anyone in the UK except me has ever seen it.

Ok. I thought it may have been my old one. It had no id and was a 69 also. It was pretty solid unlike my current one.
